The 2023 MSHSL Baseball State Tournament is underway. The quarterfinals began on June 13, and the finals will conclude on Friday, June 16.

Minnesota high school baseball state tournament: brackets

Here are the results, recaps and stat leaders from the quarterfinals. 

This page will be updated as results finalize throughout the day.


Class 1A

No. 2 New Ulm Cathedral 7, Yellow Medicine East 0

New Ulm Cathedral scored one run in the third inning, but they exploded for six runs in the fifth inning. 

Carter Haala singled to right field to drive in Colin Anderson and Kyle Seidl. With the bases loaded, Matt Seidl was bit by a pitch to drive in another run. Logan Mielke then doubled to right center to clear the bases.

New Ulm pitcher Levi Franta pitched five innings, striking out seven and allowing only one hit and one walk.

No. 3 Lyle-Pacelli 4, Hinckley-Finlayson 3

Hunter VaDeer tripled to right field to drive in a run in the first inning.

Hinckley-Finlayson scored three runs in the third inning. G. Stiel singled to left field for an RBI. M Storlie singled to drive in two runners. 

Lyle tied the game with a Logyn Brooks two-RBI single. Lyle scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch in the third inning.

VaDeer pitched 6.1 innings, allowing three earned runs, striking out 11 batters and walking one.

Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa 2, No. 1 South Ridge 1

Top-seed South Ridge scored in the third inning with an RBI from Christian Pretasky. Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa answered with two runs in the fourth inning. Ryan Jensen drove home two runners for the lead and the eventual win. 

Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa's Tanner Shelton pitched seven innings, allowing nine hits, one run, two walks and five strikeouts.

Pretasky pitched seven innings, allowing two runs, three hits, two walks and six stikeouts.

No. 5 Fosston 11, No. 4 Legacy Christian Academy 1

The Fosston offense exploded for five runs in the fourth inning and four runs in the fifth inning. The Greyhounds finished with 13 hits.

Cullen Norland had three RBIs, and Hudson Boushee recorded three RBIs as well.

Fosston pitcher Zach Theis threw six innings, allowing one earned run, five hits while walking two and striking out four.


Class 2A

No. 2 Fairmont 9, Belle Plaine 2

The Fairmont offense chipped away all game. It scored in five of seven innings, with three runs coming in the first and third innings.

Nate Soelter recorded four RBIs, and Jack Kosbab recorded three. 

Soelter also pitched seven innings, allowing four hits, two earned runs, five strikeouts and four walks.

Perham 7, No. 3 Foley 4 (12 innings)

Foley jumped to a 4-1 lead in the fifth inning, but Perham tied the game in the top of the seventh inning. The teams went four innings scoreless, but Perham scored three runs in the top of the 12th inning.

Perham pitcher Evan Kovash pitched 6.2 innings, allowing seven hits, no earned runs, two walks and four strikeouts.

No. 1 Esko 1, St. Agnes 0

Esko's Connor Pearce hit the game's only RBI as the Eskomos advance to the semifinals.

Esko pitcher Cale Haugen pitched seven innings. He struck out 12 batters to zero walks, and he only allowed two hits.

No. 5 Cannon Falls 2, No. 4 Holy Family Catholic 1


Class 3A

Grand Rapids 5, No. 2 St. Thomas Academy 0

Grand Rapids scored two runs in the third inning when Kyler Miller was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and then Kyle Henke hit a sacrifice fly to drive in the second run.

Grand Rapids added three runs in the top of the seventh inning. Henke, Dominic Broberg and Easton Sjostrand all hit RBI singles.

Sjostrand pitched seven innings. He struck out four batters, walked three and allowed three hits. 

No. 3 Mahtomedi 3, Byron 0

Mahtomedi pitcher Ethan Felling led the Zephyrs shut out the Bears with 12 strikeouts and only one walk. 

The Zephyrs scored two runs in the fourth inning and one in the fifth inning. Seth Nelson and Charles Barre hit an RBI.

No. 1 New Prague 10, Little Falls 5

The Trojans rolled Little Falls, scoring in every inning save the fifth. Hunter Novak and Jake Lundquist combined for four and three RBIs, respectively.

No. 4 Monticello 3, No. 5 Benilde-St. Margaret's 1

With the game tied at one in the bottom of the fifth inning, Caden King hit a two-RBI double to left-center field to give Monticello a spot on the semifinals. 

Monticello's Cal Ulven pitched seven innings, allowing one hit, one run, seven walks and five strikeouts.

Benilde-St. Margaret's Caleb Koskie pitched six innings, allowing three earned runs, five hits, four walks and striking out 10.


Class 4A

No. 2 East Ridge 9, Lakeville South 1

The Raptors jumped on the Cougars in the first two innings. They scored six runs in the second inning while pitcher Max Arlich four innings, allowing only one earned run.

Center fielder Riley Schellenbach scored three runs for the Raptors.

No. 3 Minnetonka 4, Mounds View 3

Senior Maxwell Pederson hit an RBI double in the bottom of the seventh inning to send the Skippers to the state semifinals. 

Mounds View took a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning, but Minnetonka responded with two runs a half-inning later. Colten Benedict hit a home run to right field to tie the game at three in the fifth inning.

Mounds View's Drew Rogers had three hits and two RBIs.

No. 1 Rosemount 4, vs. Sartell 0

Chance Swansson and William Harder each had two RBIs. Jack Thompson pitched seven innings, allowing no earned runs, striking out two and walking five.

No. 4 Edina 6, No. 5 Anoka 5 (8 innings)

The Hornets took the win on a fielding error that sent Jack Garfin home. 

Edina tied the game and sent it to extra innings after Caden Morgan hit a home run to tie the game at five.

The Tornadoes built a 5-0 through the first three innings. Edina pitcher Soren Epple then threw five scoreless innings as the Hornet's offense came alive.
