SBLive Mississippi Baseball Power 10: Madison Central No. 1 in first 2021 rankings

Every week during the 2021 baseball season, SBLive will rank the Top 10 high school baseball teams in the state of Mississippi, regardless of classification.

Here are the first SBLive Power 10 baseball rankings of the season, as compiled by SBLive Sports reporter Tyler Cleveland. 



1. Madison Central (10-0)

The Jaguars are beating the brakes off of everyone. They swept four games last week, beating Northwest Rankin, Germantown, Neshoba Central and Ridgeland by a combined score of 50-1.

2. DeSoto Central (6-0)

The undefeated Jaguars won both of their games last week, beating Starkville 14-3 and American Christian Academy 4-3.

3. Jackson Prep (13-2)

The Patriots went 3-0 last week, with wins over Tri-County Academy, Simpson Academy and Canton Academy. They have looked great since dropping a marquee matchup against DeSoto Central on March 6.

4. MRA (11-1)

The Patriots are hitting on all cylinders after beating Brandon, Starkville Academy and West Jones last week. They’ve got big games this week against Gulfport, Vancleave and DeSoto Central.

5. Oxford (8-1)

The Chargers swept three games from Lafayette in the Crosstown Classic Series by a combined score of 18-5. They’ve got two road games this week — at Saltillo and Collierville (Tenn.) — before returning home for a game against Houston Saturday afternoon.

6. Pearl River Central (11-1)

The Blue Devils beat Petal 5-4 in 12 innings Tuesday, then shut out Bowling Green (La.) 10-0 Thursday and Gulfport 1-0 Saturday afternoon. They start a two-game series against Hancock this Tuesday.

7. Sumrall (10-2)

The Bobcats went 1-1 last week with an 11-1 win over Lawrence County Thursday night and a 5-3 loss to South Panola Friday afternoon. They have two games this week — at home against Columbia Thursday night and at Stringer on Friday afternoon.

8. Vancleave (9-2)

The Bulldogs may be the best team on the coast. They swept two games from Greene County last week on Tuesday and Friday, then beat St. Patrick 18-11 Saturday. They face two big tests this week when they face MRA and Oak Grove in the spring break tournament.

9. Tupelo (8-2)

The Golden Wave beat Amory 8-4 before dropping a second mid-week game against Corinth at home. They bounced back with a 12-3 win over Booneville Friday and beat Buckhorn (Ala.) 7-2 Saturday.

10. West Jones (8-3)

West Jones bounced back from a 10-0 thumping at the hands of Madison Central by going 2-1 last week. They beat Wayne County 6-5 and Lamar Christian 4-3 (in 10 innings) before dropping a game against MRA, 8-3, Saturday afternoon.
