Each week, the team at SBLive Mississippi will take an in-depth look at the past week’s high school girls soccer action, as well as a look ahead to the action to come in the following week.

Here’s a look at the weekly girls soccer wrap for the week of Jan. 16 – Jan. 23.

Games of the Week

Madison Central4, Clinton2

On Tuesday night two of the state’s most storied soccer programs faced off in a match to determine the winner of region 1-6A. To this point in the season both the Clinton Lady Arrows (10-6-2) and the Madison Central Lady Jaguars (11-4-0) have had successful campaigns.

Both were assured playoff spots, and both had wins over the course of the season that would no doubt give them confidence heading into the playoffs. The lone difference between the teams was a Madison Central win over Clinton in penalty kicks earlier this season.

There was no doubt this matchup was going to be an intense, fun, action filled match and it proved to be just that. Clinton clearly had revenge on the mind as they struck early in the match.

The Lady Arrow’s Jakiya Michael pressed the Madison Central defense in the 3rd minute and earned her team a corner. Senior forward Tailynn Remmel took the corner and placed it in a dangerous area where it fell to teammate Cooper Holmes who smashed home the shot. Clinton was on the front foot early with a 1-0 lead.

The Lady Jags looked to respond quickly as just four minutes later they nearly evened the game. Sydney Wilson played a great pass to Olivia Tribolet who was waiting 8 yards away from goal. The forward took a first touch shot that banged off the post but stayed out of goal. Tribolet put in a corner two minutes later that found the head of Akala Jacobs but again the Lady Jags were denied by the woodwork.

The Lady Jags continued pressure eventually led to the equalizing goal in the 29th minute. Maggie Johnson popped up a pass into a dangerous area in the Clinton box. Forward Akala Jacobs got their first and although her first shot was deflected, she made no mistake about her second shot which leveled the game at 1-1.

Although Madison Central seemed in control as the first half ended, it was Clinton who again started the second half with a bang. Mandy Leach played a great pass over the top of the Lady Jag defense. Forward Tailynn Remmel showed off her speed flying past everyone and getting a 1 on 1 chance with the goalkeeper. Remmel blasted her shot past the keeper and the Lady Arrows retook the lead 2-1.

Madison Central went back to work yet again controlling the game through possession and great buildup play. This led to another Madison Central equalizer in the 55th minute. Anna Wheatley played a great pass that got Akala Jacobs behind the Lady Arrow defense. As the Clinton goalkeeper rushed to stop the chance, she mistakenly tripped Jacobs resulting in a Madison Central penalty kick. Wheatly stepped up to take and despite a valiant effort from the goalkeeper Wheatley buried the kick. The game was tied again this time 2-2.

With the game tied so late it felt that the next team to score would be victorious and Madison Central did just that in the 65th minute. Olivia Tribolet received the ball at midfield with a defender on her back. She turned nicely beating her defender and raced down the field. She let rip of a shot from 25 yards that was nicely saved by the Clinton goalkeeper but was spilled right into the path of Akala Jacobs. Jacobs tapped home the finish from 3 yards and gave Madison Central their first lead of the night.

Tribolet put the nail in the coffin in the 72nd minute when she scorched a free kick from 30 yards that went up and over the wall and into the right side of the net. Madison Central were not only victorious 4-2 over Clinton, but they were the region 1-6A champs.

Up next: Madison Central concluded their perfect region season on Friday night with a 3-0 win over Germantown. They will host Desoto Central, a team they beat 5-0 earlier this season, in the first round of the playoffs next Tuesday. Clinton dropped a tough game to Northwest Rankin Friday night 0-2. They will head to Lewisburg for the first round of the playoffs next Tuesday.

Northwest Rankin2, Clinton0

The Northwest Rankin Lady Cougars (18-1-2) made the short trip to Clinton to face off with the Lady Arrows (10-6-2) on Thursday night. Both teams had already punched their tickets to the playoffs with impressive seasons. The game served as great preparation for the quality of opponent the two teams will face in the postseason.

The Lady Cougars were region champions and were dominant almost every step of the way this season. Their consistent impressive play certainly has them in the discussion for a south state championship and possibly even a state championship.

Although the Lady Arrows finished second in their region, they are still a team no one wants to face come playoff time. They have proven that they are a competitive team that on any given night could come out with the win. They will also certainly be looking to make a deep playoff run to a north state or state championship game.

Northwest Rankin were the first to come up big in the frigid temperatures scoring the opening goal in the 5th minute. The ball fell to KK Morris at the top right side of the box following a poor clearance from the Clinton defense. Morris drilled the shot and it come off the underside of the cross bar and went in giving Northwest Rankin an early 1-0 lead.

The remaining portion of the first half went back and forth with both teams having half chances. Including forward Tailynn Remmel nearly getting behind the Northwest Rankin defense off a nice through ball from Mckenzie Price. On the other end a minute later Emily Welch put in a dangerous cross that nearly found the head of a teammate but was cut out by the Clinton goalkeeper.

The Lady Cougars had one last chance to close the half off a dangerous cross from the right side. The pass went by everyone however and the half came to a close with Northwest Rankin up 1-0.

Clinton came out aggressive in the second half which nearly saw them score the equalizer in the 44th minute. Tailynn Remmel and Mckenzie Price worked a nice give and go that ended with Price playing a pass to Remmel that had the Northwest Rankin defense beat. The Lady Cougars goalkeeper was alert to the danger though and came off her line to cut out the chance.

Northwest Rankin then doubled their lead though in the 57th minute. Tyler Grace Sims found herself with the ball down the right hand side in tons of space. Sims played a perfect cross right into the danger area that teammate KK Morris ran onto and smashed home.

The Lady Arrows continued to fight and had some nice buildup play in the 65th minute between Tailynn Remmel and Addison Pletzke. It unfortunately did not result in a scoring chance and the game came to a close shortly after. Northwest Rankin continued their dominant form beating Clinton 2-0.
