MHSAA Class 3A All-Sports Awards: St. Patrick edges St. Andrew's for top spot

JACKSON — With the 2021-2022 athletic year in the rearview mirror, it's time to take a look at the athletic programs from across the state which enjoyed the most success.

The All-Sports Awards are based on a formula that awards a certain point total for each measure of success in an individual sport. For team sports with a post-season, for example, a program will get points for putting a team into the playoffs, and then additional points for each round that team reaches.

For ranked sports, such as powerlifting or cross country, the team that wins the state championship receives the most points, the runner-up the second-most, and so on.

So without further ado, here's a look at the All-Sports Awards for the 2021-2022 athletic season for the MHSAA's Class 3A.

Class 3A

1. St. Patrick - 295

Championships: Boys Cross Country

They might not have brought home many state championships, but the Irish were in the fight for a bunch of them. St. Patrick made the playoffs in just about every sport. They finished runner-up in girls and boys swimming, girls cross country and boys track. They also reached the semifinals in boys basketball, boys and girls soccer and volleyball.

2. St. Andrew’s - 290

Championships: Girls Swimming, Boys Swimming, Boys Golf, Tennis

As usual, the Saints won a slew of championships in the 2021-2022 athletic year. They also finished runner-up in boys and girls soccer and girls track. Their point total would have taken home first prize in pretty much any other year, and was good enough for third overall after Madison Central and St. Patrick.

3. Kossuth - 252.5

Championships: Girls Bowling, Boys Bowling, Boys Powerlifting, Girls Powerlifting

The Aggies were a powerhouse in several sports this year. In addition to their four championships, they reached the semifinals in volleyball and softball and finished third in girls and boys cross country.

Best of the rest: Alcorn Central (212.5), St. Stanislaus (145), Booneville (142.5), Water Valley (132.5).
