Liberty boys, Lebanon girls continue Missouri wrestling championship streaks

Liberty wins fourth straight Class 4 title; Lebanon takes third straight

COLUMBIA, Mo. – There wasn't much drama in the Liberty wrestling team's Missouri Class 4 championship run on Saturday at Mizzou Arena.

Just domination.

The Blue Jays captured their fourth consecutive Missouri Class 4 title with 218 points – well ahead of second-place Francis Howell Central (90.5) and third-place Staley (88) – fueled by eight wrestlers who finished first or second in their respective weight classes.

Coach Dustin Brewer's squad had three individual champions in juniors Hunter Taylor (120 pounds), Christopher Coates (138) and Gavin Linsman (144).

Coates won his third state title after winning at 120 pounds as a freshman and 132 as a sophomore. Taylor won his second championship after winning at 113 pounds a year ago.

The Blue Jays had five second-place finishers: sophomore Devon Harrison (113), senior Kolby McClain (150), freshman Trey Craig (157), sophomore Peyton Westpfahl (175) and sophomore Trenton Bindel (285).

Additionally, freshman Cade Dunn (106) placed fourth and senior Cooper Rider (126) fifth – giving Liberty 10 wrestlers who made the podium on Saturday night.

The Blue Jays had 12 wrestlers qualify for state this year, which was the most of any Class 4 team, and only two of them are seniors.

So Liberty's drive for five straight state championships starts now.
