Photos: Licking tops Barstow in Missouri Class 3 semifinal
OZARK, Mo. – The Licking baseball team had a bit of a rough start Wednesday.
The Wildcats surrendered a run in the top of the first inning of their Class 3 semifinal playoff game against Barstow and just like that trailed Barstow early. Fortunately for Coach Harv Antle's squad, that was all they would allow
Licking overcame its challenging start by scoring two runs in the second inning and, after a 30-minute lightning delay, added two more in the fifth for a 4-1 victory to advance to the Class 3 championship game on Thursday.
After allowing the first-inning run, junior righthander Keyton Cook (6-0) settled in threw five shutout innings to earn the win. He allowed one run on four hits, struck out two and walked four over six innings. Rusty Buckner, another junior righty, tossed a scoreless seventh for his fourth save of the season.
Licking (25-6) advances to face South Callaway (24-7) in the Class 3 championship game at 1 p.m. Thursday. Barstow (23-7) will play Portageville (34-3) in the third-place game at 10 a.m.
Junior shortstop Kellar Davis, senior center field Cole Wallace and senior second baseman Keyton Rinne led the Wildcats offense, which only four four hits but took advantage of six Barstow errors. Davis, Wallace and Rinne each had a hit and drove in a run, while Davis scored twice.
Junior shortstop David Guldin led the Barstow offense with two of Knights' four hits and their only run scored.
