Amari Whiting flips from Oregon, follows her mom to BYU

High school athletes often cite "family atmosphere" as a primary reason for making their college choice.

Amari Whiting's flip from Oregon to BYU on Tuesday is about as textbook as it comes in that regard.

Amber Whiting recently became BYU's first female coach of the Cougars' women's basketball team since 1997, and now her highly ranked daughter from Burley High School in Idaho is joining the cause.

Amari Whiting is a 5-foot-10 point guard who averaged 26.9 points, 10.5 rebounds and 5.7 steals per game in leading Burley to a 25-1 record and the Idaho 4A state title last season.

She went from doubting she could follow in her family's footsteps to becoming one of the best Class of 2023 point guards in the country.

Her father, Trent Whiting, was a professional basketball player for several teams overseas where he averaged almost 20 points per game during the course of his 12 seasons. Previously, he had played at BYU and Snow College (Utah) with Amber. 

Now Amari and Amber will continue that family legacy together at BYU.
