A family, team and community are mourning after the tragic death of a local star.

Elijah DeWitt, a standout football player at Jefferson (Georgia), was shot and killed Wednesday night at a mall parking lot in Lawrenceville. Local police released a statement Thursday saying one suspect is in custody for what they are investigating as a homicide.

“The Jefferson High School Football program is heartbroken as we mourn the loss of one of our own,” the team shared on Twitter.

The 17-year-old played his junior year at Prince Avenue Christian, but he transferred back to his hometown school Jefferson for his senior year.

DeWitt received his first college offer in May from Arkansas State. In six games this season, he racked up 22 catches for 594 yards and five touchdowns.
