What we're watching: Power 25 national high school football games of the week: (Oct. 27-29)

Five Texas high school football games are on our radar this week

We released our 11th SBLive Power 25 of 2022 on Monday — our weekly look at the top 25 teams in the country.

There are five nationally relevant games in Texas this week headlined by No. 13 North Shore (Houston) at Atascocita (Humble) on Thursday night. In Arizona, No. 10 Chandler hosts a very talented Basha (Chandler) squad on Friday.

Here’s a closer look at a few of the country's elite and who they'll take on with an emphasis on how the result could influence next week's Power 25 rankings.

What we're watching this week:

Thursday

No. 11 Westlake-Austin, Texas (8-0) at Bowie-Austin, Texas (7-1)

Westlake has won 48 games in a row dating back to 2019. The Chaparrals are led by senior receivers Jaden Greathouse, a Notre Dame commit, and Keaton Kubecka, a Kansas commit. Class of 2023 interior lineman TJ Shanahan is committed to Texas A&M and class of 2023 edge rusher Colton Vasek is committed to Oklahoma. Shanahan suffered a knee injury two weeks ago in Westlake's 29-10 win over Dripping Springs. He hopes to be back for the playoffs.

CalPreps ranks Bowie as the No. 61 team in Texas and Westlake at No. 6. The Bulldogs are good, but not good enough to pull off the upset here.

Bowie's top player is 2023 Texas Tech wide receiver commit Kelby Valsin.

Prediction on how the game impacts Power 25: Westlake wins big to stay in next week's Power 25.

No. 12 Guyer-Denton, Texas (8-0) at McKinney-Texas (6-2)

Guyer has three blue chip prospects on its roster in 2023 quarterback Jackson Arnold (Oklahoma commit), 2023 safety Peyton Bowen (Notre Dame) and 2023 safety Ryan Yaites (LSU). The Wildcats are playing like the No. 1 team in Texas high school football right now — last week Guyer blew out Allen 49-7.

McKinney is a top 50 team in Texas, but like the Westlake vs. Bowie matchup, don't expect an upset here either.

McKinney's highest rated senior recruit is Arkansas safety commit Christian Ford. In the junior class, cornerback Xavier Filsaime and running back/linebacker Bryan Jackson are both national recruits.

Prediction on how the game impacts Power 25: Guyer wins big to stay in next week's Power 25.

No. 13 North Shore-Houston (8-0) at Atascocita-Humble, Texas (7-1)

This is the game of the week nationally. CalPreps ranks North Shore as the No. 3 team in Texas and Atascocita at No. 5.

North Shore has won three Class 6A Division I state championships in the last four years in Texas. Once again, they're firmly in the mix to win that crown in December. The Mustangs top players are 2023 UTSA WR commit David Amador, who has played quarterback for North Shore since starter Kaleb Bailey went down with an injury, 2023 corner Jacoby Davis and 2023 linebacker Jayven Anderson.

For Atascocita, senior defensive lineman Samu Taumanupepe is committed to Texas A&M and junior corner Braylon Conley and junior offensive lineman Nate Kibble are both national recruits.

Prediction on how the game impacts Power 25: North Shore wins, but it's close enough to keep Atascocita on our radar

Friday

Basha-Chandler, Ariz. (6-1) at No. 10 Chandler-Ariz. (7-0)

This game will serve as an Open Division playoff preview in Arizona. No matter what happens on Friday, expect both teams to still make the eight team Open Division in a few weeks. These are two of the most talented teams in Arizona high school football.

Basha's led by seniors Cole Martin (Oregon commit), a cornerback, linebacker Wyatt Milkovic (Boise State), running back Deshaun Buchanan (Idaho) and offensive linemen James Durand (Wisconsin), Ryan Blum (Central Michigan) and Tyson Simmons (Navy). Basha also has two national recruits from the 2024 class in athlete Miles Lockhart and quarterback Demond Williams Jr.

The nation's No. 1 QB in 2024, Ohio State commit Dylan Raiola, is Chandler's top player. He's thrown for 1,465 yards and 17 touchdowns this year.

Prediction on how the game impacts Power 25: Chandler wins by two scores to stay in next week's top ten.

No. 15 Colquitt County-Norman Park, Ga. (8-0) at Valdosta-Ga. (8-1)

Colquitt County has beaten every team they've faced this season by at least three scores. The Packers top players are safety Jack Luttrell (Tennessee commit), linebacker Kamal Bonner (Georgia Tech), running back Charlie Pace (Georgia Southern), tight end Landen Thomas (Georgia) and wide receiver Ny Carr (Georgia).

Valdosta was undefeated heading into last week's game against Camden County (Kingsland, Ga.), but lost 17-14. Valdosta is still one of the best teams in Georgia, so this won't be a walk in the park for Colquitt County, but when the Packers played Camden County this season they won 49-21.

Prediction on how the game impacts Power 25: Colquitt County wins a blowout to stay in next week's Power 25.

No. 18 Duncanville-Texas (7-0) at DeSoto-Texas (7-1)

Duncanville won its 38th consecutive District game last week. The Panthers have arguably the best defense in Texas high school football and the program has a laundry list of top recruits including junior edge rusher Collin Simmons, senior receiver Lontrell Turner, senior safety Deldrick Madison, senior corner Lamodrick Spencer, senior tackle Benjamin Whitfield (TCU), junior tailback Caden Durham, junior safety Ka'Davion Dotson, junior defensive lineman Alex January, sophomore receiver Dakorien “Rook” Moore and freshman receiver Zach Turner.

Duncanville beat DeSoto 42-21 last season. The Eagles are talented and have a good record, but expect a similar scoreline on Friday. The last time DeSoto played a Power 25 team, they lost 47-7 to No. 7 St. Frances Academy (Baltimore) back in September. DeSoto's top player is 2023 Texas wide receiver commit Johntay Cook II.

Prediction on how the game impacts Power 25: Duncanville wins to stay in next week's top 20.

No. 20 St. Joseph’s Prep-Philadelphia (6-1) at Roman Catholic-Philadelphia (7-1)

St. Joseph Prep's best players are 2023 West Virginia linebacker commit Josiah Trotter, 2024 corner Omillio Agard, 2024 QB Samaj Jones and 2024 wide receiver Brandon Rehmann.

When St. Joseph's Prep played Roman Catholic last season, they won 44-14. Could this year's game be closer? Roman Catholic has some serious star power on its lines. Class of 2023 Penn State commit Jameial Lyons, a defensive lineman, and 2023 Kentucky commit Austin Ramsey, an offensive lineman, could be difference makers for Roman Catholic this week.

Prediction on how the game impacts Power 25: St. Joseph Prep wins big to stay in next week's top 20.

Mililani-Hawaii (7-3) at Kahuku-Hawaii (9-2)

This game pits Hawaii's No. 1 (Kahuku) against Hawaii's No. 2 (Mililani) in the OIA Open Division Championship. When these teams met in the regular season, Kahuku won 29-17. Class of 2023 Kahuku linebacker Liona Lefau is committed to Texas and 2023 safety Brock Fonoimoana is committed to Utah. Class of 2023 Mililani safety Gavin Hunter is committed to the University of Arizona.

Prediction on how the game impacts Power 25: Kahuku wins to keep their hopes of ending the year ranked alive.

Byron Nelson-Trophy Club, Texas (8-0) at Southlake Carroll-Texas (8-0)

This battle of undefeated teams in Texas will determine who stays on our Power 25 radar. Carroll senior QB Kaden Anderson is committed to Wyoming. Byron Nelson junior safety David Kabongo has received four Power Five offers, according to 247Sports.com.

Prediction on how the game impacts Power 25: The winner stays on our radar but will need to record an upset or two in the postseason to warrant serious Power 25 consideration.

St. John’s-District of Columbia (5-3) at Our Lady of Good Counsel-Olney, Md. (7-1)

Our Lady of Good Counsel's lone loss on the year came against Archbishop Moeller (Cincinnati, Ohio) 39-31 back in September. If Moeller goes on to win a Division 1 championship in Ohio and Our Lady of Good Counsel wins out, there's a chance both teams could be ranked in the Power 25 come the end of the season.

Our Lady Good Counsel's top senior recruit is defensive lineman Neeo Avery, an Ole Miss commit. In total, eight Good Counsel seniors and juniors have received at least one Division 1 scholarship offer.

St. John's has three losses, but the Cadets have a ton of next level talent on their roster too. Senior edge rusher David Ojiegbe is committed to Clemson, senior safety Zahbari Sandy is committed to South Carolina, senior wide receiver Sean Williams is a Maryland pledge, senior cornerback Collin Gill is committed to Oregon and senior athlete Rohan Davy is committed to Cincinnati. In the 2024 class, St. John's offensive lineman Jordan Seaton is another national recruit.

Prediction on how the game impacts Power 25: Our Lady of Good Counsel wins to stay on our Power 25 radar.
