It didn't take long for the top two high school boys basketball teams in the nation to go head-to-head.
And AZ Compass Prep (Arizona) aced its National Interscholastic Basketball Conference debut with flying colors.
Rayvon Griffith finished with a team-high 12 points and five rebounds as AZ Compass Prep (Arizona) beat Montverde Academy 65-54 behind an even spread of contribution and knock-down shooting in the AXE NIBC Series in Pleasant Grove, Utah on Tuesday night.
Griffith, a four-star forward and Cincinnati commit, was one of five Dragons with at least eight points.
It's the only time Montverde, the two-time defending GEICO Nationals champs and the nation's No. 1 team in the SBLive/Sports Illustrated Power 25, and No. 2 AZ Compass Prep are scheduled to play in the 2022-23 regular season.
Both are considered preseason favorites to win the National Interscholastic Basketball Conference. AZ Compass Prep was one of two schools added to the conference since last season, joining alongside Long Island Lutheran (New York).
Montverde was led by 13 points from Liam McNeely, an uncommitted 2024 five-star prospect and eight points, seven boards, four assists and two steals from standout 2025 forward Cooper Flagg.
AZ Compass Prep took a 33-30 lead into halftime and built a double-digit second half lead, which it held, buoyed by a 46.7 percent second half shooting percentage, including 4 of 7 on 3-pointers. It held a 14-point lead with just over two minutes left.
Mookie Cook, a five-star Oregon pledge, had eight points and four assists on 4 of 7 shooting for the Dragons.
