SBLive Sports National High School Wrestling Rankings (2/16/2023)

Iowa, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Nebraska and Virginia, among others, holding state tournaments this weekend
National High School Wrestling Rankings

Individual state tournaments are picking up steam at this point in the season. Some of the more nationally competitive states that are having their state tournaments this weekend include Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Nebraska and Virginia. Iowa’s state tournament started on Wednesday and continues until Saturday night.

Illinois’ regional tournaments didn’t reveal any upsets, but there was a big change to the national rankings when Kannon Webster (Washington), the No. 1 138lber in the country, chose to enter the postseason series at 145lbs. Interestingly, the new No. 1 at 138 hails from Illinois too, Nasir Bailey (Rich Township). Webster slides in at No. 2 at 144/145.

Illinois has a second new No. 1 after Koy Hopke (Amery, WI) dropped from 285 to 215, leaving Joliet Catholic’s Dillan Johnson as the top dog at heavyweight.

The other notable thing from the Illinois regions was the absence of No. 11 Jaydon Robinson (Homewood Flossmoor) at 145. SBLive Sports could not determine the reason for his non-participation.

Nationally, there were a few other guys missing from the end of season run. In Indiana, Ironman placer, No. 23 Anthony Rinehart (Crown Point) could not be found in the 157lb brackets.

Two highly ranked grapplers from the same team, Gilroy, were absent from last weekend’s sectionals in California, No. 7 Moses Mendoza (113) and No. 6 Cody Merrill (220). Merrill’s injury that kept him out of the early stages of the season may have reared its head again, nothing is known about Mendoza.

Before we move on, there were a few notable results from the California Sectionals to mention. At 106, unranked Thunder Lewis decisioned No. 14 Rocklin Zinkin (Buchanan), 7-3 in the Central Section D1 finals. Zinkin has two wins over Lewis this year, and Lewis also lost to Granite Hill’s No. 21 Abram Cline, so we added Lewis into the rankings behind Cline.

There was a mild upset at 132 with No. 12 Aden Valencia (Ann Sobrato) posting an 8-0 major decision over No. 11 Daniel Zepeda (Gilroy) in the Central Coast Section Southern Region finals. Zepeda previously beat Valencia 6-4 at the Doc Buchanan Tournament.

Gilroy’s Maxximus Martinez moved up to 152 from 145. At 195, Mark Marin (Clovis) dropped from 220. Marin owns a win over Fountain Valley’s Rylan Whitworth from the Zinkin Classic, so he slots in ahead of Whitworth at No. 24.

Hopke dropping weight in Wisconsin was just one of a few shifts involving top ten wrestlers. The Mirasola brothers, Connor and Cole, jumped up in weight. Connor went from 182 to 195. Cole jumped from 195 to 285. Aeoden Sinclair rose from 195 to 220. There were no upsets on the mat in Wisconsin, just the weight changes.

In addition to Hopke coming down to 220 from 285, Blair’s No. 3 at 285 Carter Neves also made the cut to 215/220. Blair made two other moves ahead of the National Prep Tournament qualifier to maximize their powerful roster. Tyler DeKraker went from 106 to 113. Lorenzo Norman and Peter Snyder flip-flopped weights, with Norman now at 175 and Snyder at 165.

New York’s Tyler Ferrera (Chenango Forks) won the Beast of the East at 126lbs but moved to 132 for the state tournament.

Delaware will have their dual meet state tournament this weekend. Oklahoma and Pennsylvania had theirs last weekend. Brayden Thompson, who transferred from Illinois’ Lockport Township to Stillwater mid-season, surfaced at 215.

The nationally ranked upsets, of which there were only two, occurred in the 6A Division. At 126, No. 23 Gage Walker (Bixby) beat No. 20 JJ McComas (Stillwater), 8-3. Another Bixby wrestler shined at 150 as unranked Clay Giddens-Buttram used overtime to upset No. 9 Kael Voinovich (Stillwater), 5-3. Giddens-Buttram is now No. 17 at 150.

The Pennsylvania tournament provided a few key upsets, starting at 106 with Central Dauphin’s unranked Thunder Beard pinning No. 24 Tanner Mizenko (Canon-McMilan), 4:38, and therefore, knocking him out of the top 25.

Bethlehem Catholic’s Cael McIntyre has been on the cusp of the rankings all year. His upset of Central Mountain’s Luke Simcox (No. 14 at 138) was his first signature win of the season. Unfortunately, McIntyre has too many losses to other unranked guys on his ledger to crack our rankings.

Andrew Harmon pulled off Bethlehem Catholic’s second big upset, blanking No. 17 Bekhruz Sadriddinov (Council Rock South), 7-0 at 160. Harmon is now at No. 20 with Sadriddinov below him at No. 21.

Nazareth’s Dominic Wheatley kicked No. 21 Matthew Furman (Canon-McMilan) out of the rankings with a 4-2 overtime win at 172.
