Greeley turned in the performance of the year Jan. 31 when he scored 50 points in a win against Torrington

Gering boys basketball playerMaxwell Greeley was voted SBLive Nebraska High School Athlete of the Week for Jan. 30-Feb. 5. He totaled 12,220 votes (40.51%). Niobrara/Verdigree girls basketball player Josilyn Miller was second with 10,033 votes (33.26%). 

Greeley turned in the performance of the year Jan. 31 when he scored 50 points in a win against Torrington. There have been a handful of 40-point games this season but none at the half-century mark until Greeley hit 19 of 30 shots, went 5 of 10 from long range, 7 of 10 from the line and swiped away seven steals. His 50-burger smashed the previous Gering record of 41 points set in 1987. Greeley had 30 by the end of the third quarter and set the school record with about four minutes left in the game. He then had 29 and 22 in two other games later in the week.
