Carter Nelson, nation's No. 2 tight end, commits to Nebraska; Cornhuskers secure top 4 in-state prospects

Nebraska secures the top three players in the home state in one weekend

Entering the week, the Nebraska Cornhuskers had just one commitment from a top-four in-state 2024 prospect, Bellevue West quarterback Daniel Kaelin.

By Wednesday, Matt Rhule and his coaching staff had secured a clean sweep.

Following the double commitment of Bellevue West wide receivers Dae'vonn Hall and Isaiah McMorris on Friday, Nebraska hosted Ainsworth star Carter Nelson on an official visit over the weekend.

It was one of the most crucial trips in recent memory. .

The 6-foot-4, 205-pound pass-catcher, rated the nation's No. 40 overall prospect and No. 2 tight end, is one of the most celebrated Nebraska high schoolers in modern history.

Nelson, who boasts 4.5 speed, holds offers from Alabama, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, Miami, Michigan, Notre Dame, Oklahoma, Oregon, Penn State, Tennessee, Texas and many others.

On Wednesday, however, he put an end to the process, announcing his commitment to the Cornhuskers.

As a junior, Nelson was one of the most versatile playmakers in the country, passing for 663 yards and 15 touchdowns, running for 761 yards and 14 scores and adding 525 yards and 11 touchdowns receiving.

Here's what 247Sports had to say about Nelson as a prospect:

"Varied background that includes snaps on both sides of the ball as well as special teams in high school. High-flyer on the basketball court and also has rare results as a track sprinter, high-jumper and thrower for someone of his size. Frame can still support a lot of additional growth. Has a good catch radius and can make catches in traffic. Is by far the best athlete on the field on his film. Will have to adjust to the level of competition in college. Certainly has every needed athletic tool in the kit. Will have to settle into a position -- which is likely tight end -- get stronger and learn the nuances. Defense is not completely out of the question but he has big upside as a flex weapon on offense. Shows willingness and physicality as a blocker so playing on the ball especially after he adds weight is very possible. Big upside with the kind of profile that often ends up in the professional ranks."

The Ainsworth star is not only one of the highest-rated in-state prospects in program history, but his commitment marks back-to-back years in which Rhule has secured an historic in-state pledges.

In the 2023 recruiting cycle, Nebraska secured the commitment of Lincoln East four-star athlete Malachi Coleman, the nation's No. 63 overall prospect and No. 11 wide receiver.

Given the current collection of Kaelin and his in-state pass-catchers, it looks like Nebraska's on-field future may be highlighted by an all-in-state passing attack.
