Consistency.

It can be a good thing. It certainly was for Tanner Brewster.

Brewster, a Sandy senior, turned his consistency into a championship, as he triumphed in the discus event at the Oregon 6A Track and Field Showcase on Saturday at Pioneer Memorial Stadium in Oregon City.

“It means a lot,” Brewster said. “I’ve been competing against a lot of these guys for a while, and to come out here and stay consistent with the throws and finish with a state championship is pretty nice.”

While Brewster stayed consistent, it was his second throw of the competition that turned out to be the winning throw. With that throw, a toss of 155 feet, 9 inches, he moved into first place and stayed there the rest of the way.

“That’s pretty consistent,” Brewster said of the winning throw. “My PR (personal record) is 156. I’ve been there the whole year, but can’t seem to break it, but staying consistent is pretty good.”

Brewster needed to stay ahead of Sherwood senior Noah Culbertson, who won Friday’s shot put event, with Brewster finishing second.

“That’s definitely insane. He’s got a big crowd behind him,” Brewster said. “That means a lot to come out here, compete against him, and finally finish in first. He always just beats me.”

Culbertson closed the gap with a throw of 154-4, but he fouled on his final attempt, clinching the discus title for Brewster.

“This was amazing,” Brewster said. “The competition is great. Everyone is so respectful. That makes it so much better, having everyone by your side.”

Tigard junior Elijah Jackman finished in third place with a toss of 152-8. Sunset senior Liam Brown was fourth at 151-3.
