DAYTON, Tex. - The Lake Creek Lions of Montgomery made their way to Bronco Stadium Friday evening and came away with a 58-34 victory over Dayton in the 2021 Texas high school football season opener for both teams.

The Lions, who defeated the the Broncos last season, were looking to continue their dominance on the football field. Dayton had other plans.

On a muggy Friday evening, the Lions found the red zone first. On a rushing play, the Lions offensive line opened a hole for running back Justin Freeney. The Lake Creek defense defense then forced a turnover and took advantage of it. Multi-sport athlete Samson Pugh hauled in a 40-yard touchdown pass to put Lake Creek up 13-0.

Dayton responded on a 57-yard touchdown run by running back Daveon Washington, who exploded through the hole created by the Bronco offensive line, to cut the lead to 13-7.

On the ensuing drive Lake Creek scored again as quarterback Cade Tessier kept the ball and found the end zone with a five-yard scamper. The Lions were successful on a two-point conversion to increase their lead to 21-7.

Dayton head coach Blake Ware was visibly upset by the early deficit, which only grew after Lake Creek added a field goal to go up 24-7.

Dayton’s offense finally got rolling in the second quarter as quarterback Blayne Denton found wide receiver Donavan Orebo on a 22-yard touchdown pass. After getting a turnover on downs, Denton then hooked up with athlete Ashton Garner on a 42-yard touchdown pass to cut the lead to 24-21.

But Lake Creek quickly squashed the momentum as kick returner Sam Lee took the kickoff and returned it 60 yards for the touchdown. That gave Lake Creek a 30-21 lead, which they would take into halftime.

A grand halftime performance by the Dayton Dazzlers and the Mighty Bronco Band reminded everyone in the crowd that football was back in town.

The third quarter was all Lake Creek as the Broncos failed to find the end zone. Nothing seemed to work for the Bronco offense.

Tessier scored again on a 20-yard scamper as he pushed a Bronco defender to the ground. Then Sam Lee did it again, this time returning a punt 70 yards for a touchdown to widen Lake Creek's lead to 44-21.

With their backs against the wall, the Bronco offense responded. Denton found Garner for another scoring play, this time a 40-yard pass. Flags came flying in after the play as offsetting penalties were assessed. Things began to get heated with both teams after the scoring play.

The Bronco defense came alive, giving the ball right back to the offense, who responded with another scoring drive to cut the lead to 44-34. After a failed onside kick, Freeney juked his way around the Bronco defense and found the end zone on a 35-yard rush. As Freeney scored, you could see the air come out of the crowd. On the next possession, Lake Creek defensive back Tate Swann picked off a pass to seal the victory. The Lions scored another TD late to account for the final score of 58-34.

Lake Creek (1-0) will host New Caney Porter on Thursday, Sept. 2. Dayton (0-1) will travel to Montgomery on Friday, Sept. 3 to take on the Bears.
