Jesuit and Mountainside had a memorable matchup during the spring season — a 21-14 win for the Crusaders — and there was plenty of anticipation for the rematch Friday night at Mountainside High School.

Unfortunately, the game was wiped from the schedule Wednesday because of a COVID situation in the Mavericks program.

“Our kids are disappointed because we knew Mountainside was a good team and we were looking forward to see how we would play,” Jesuit coach Ken Potter said. “Everyone likes to play games, and Friday nights are special.”

Other teams hit with cancellations midweek often try to find a new opponent at the eleventh hour, but the Crusaders chose not to go that route.

“After hearing that we would not play Mountainside, we made a plan to practice until Thursday and then take Friday as a bye game and come back Monday as fresh as possible,” Potter said. “We decided not to try to find another game at that time.”

Jesuit, ranked No. 7 in this week’s SBLive Oregon Class 6A media poll, will return to action Oct. 29 at home against Sunset. The Apollos beat the Crusaders 31-14 in Week 5 of the spring season.
