Highlights and photos: St. Augustine and San Marcos slug way to 11-11 tie in Bill Whittaker Classic

SAN MARCOS, Calif. -- It's only week one of the high school baseball season in California but Friday's Bill Whittaker Classic game between St. Augustine and host San Marcos will be a candidate for game of the year. The game took over three hours, featured four lead changes, four ties and ended in an 11-11 tie after the umpires called the game due to darkness following the completion of the seventh inning.

San Marcos jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two innings, thanks in part to a two-run opposite field blast by third baseman Liam Herrera. The Saints began chipping away, scoring four runs over the course of the the third and fourth innings before San Marcos leadoff hitter Zac Farrell launched a solo home run to left field to extend the Knights' lead to 6-4. Franklin Carney's two-run home run for St. Augustine in the fifth inning tied the game at six. San Marcos responded right away with a rally that scored two runs including a bases-loaded walk to Farrell.

St. Augustine punched back in the sixth inning with a two-run double by Justin Heffler that tied the game and a single by Frankie Giacalone that gave the Saints their first lead. Brett Williams singled in Ryan Rivera in the bottom of the inning to retie the game at nine. The Saints added two more in the top of the inning, the second run coming on an rbi double by Cade Martinez. Martinez then entered on the mound to attempt to close out the win for the Saints. He issued a one-out walk to Dillon O'Neil before Zac Farrell stepped up and launched his second home run of the day over the left field wall to once again tie the game at 11. Martinez finished off the inning, retiring Kalen Applefield and Ryan Rivera before the umpires stepped in and called the game due to darkness.
