Here are the candidates for SBLive’s North Carolina High School Coach of the Week for Sept. 29-Oct. 1 as nominated SBLive’s staff. Read through the nominees and cast your vote at the bottom of the page. Voting will conclude on Thurs., Oct. 6 at 11:59 p.m. and the winner will be announced Friday, Oct. 7.

Vance Hanner, East Davidson

Hanner’s team scored an impressive 52-27 thumping of North Rowan. The Golden Eagles are 4-2 overall and 2-0 in the Central Carolina Conference. East Davidson runs a flexbone offense made famous by the service academies and it’s clearly working.

This is Hanner’s second stint with East Davidson. The Golden Eagles were 6-5 last season and they have a good chance of winning seven games in 2022.

J.P. Price, Whiteville

Whiteville started the season by taking its lumps in a 44-15 loss to North Brunswick. Then the Wolfpack won a crazy 64-62 shootout over West Brunswick. Since then it has been smooth sailing.

The Wolfpack sits at 5-1 and this is despite losing a pair of 1,000-yard running backs to graduation. Price just keeps them rolling.

Jim Vereen, Millbrook

The Wildcats’ interim head coach just directed his team to a dominating 28-6 win over Heritage in a battle unbeaten teams. Millbrook hasn't skipped a beat with Vereen, a 42-year coaching veteran, at the helm.

Millbrook is 6-0 and has won all its games in convincing fashion.

Adam Hodge, South Point

The Red Raiders just beat a good Crest team 35-13 to improve to 6-0 for the season. Hodges guided South Point to the 3-A state championship game last year and it looks like he has the Red Raiders primed for another deep run in the playoffs.

Next up is a showdown with Kings Mountain.

Andrew Carrouth, North Moore

North Moore hasn’t been known as a football power. Rather, the opposite. That has changed drastically.

Carrouth has the Mustangs sitting at 6-0 after a 67-7 wipeout of Jordan-Matthews. The Mustangs have won every game convincingly. This comes on the heels of a 10-2 season in 2021. Carrouth has this program in good shape.

Clayton Trivett, Salisbury

A star offensive lineman in high school and college, Trivett knows how to win. He endured some rough years at Central Davidson before building up the program and making it a winner.

And now Trivett is back in Salisbury where he played college football at Catawba. The Hornets are 6-1 and poised for another big season in Trivett’s first season at the helm.

Paul Whitaker, West Henderson

The undefeated Falcons held off a fourth quarter rally by Smoky Mountain to win 23-21 and take control of their conference race. The Falcons are 6-0 after going 3-8 in the 2021. That's a huge improvement.

Shane Timmons, Randleman

Randleman improved to 4-2 with a 49-0 pounding of Wheatmore. The Tigers, a traditional 2-A power, won just four games in 2021 after being decimated by graduation.

Timmons has stayed the course and the Tigers are working their way back.
