Truitt Manuel, West Henderson, Football
Manuel caught 13 passes for 218 yards and 5 touchdowns in the undefeated Falcons 55-7 rout of Tuscola, giving them their first conference title since 1996. Manuel is a North Carolina State baseball recruit.
That's really getting it done.
Dionte Neal, Reidsville, Football
The sensational freshman intercepted two passes as the Rams rolled to a 63-0 victory over Morehead. Neal leads the state with 11 interceptions and that's a school record.
And to think he's just getting started.
Elizabeth Rudisill, Myers Park, Golf
Just a sophomore, Rudisill shot 67 in both rounds to win the 4-A state championship in record-setting fashion. Rudisill’s 10-under-par 134 is a new scoring record for NCHSAA Women’s Golf.
Emily Matthews, Eastern Alamance, Golf
Matthews shot rounds of 73 and 66 to win her third consecutive 3-A state championship. A senior, Matthews finished 11 shots ahead of her nearest competitor.
Charlie Gottlieb, Independence, Football
Brought over from the soccer team after the Patriots’ regular kicker was injured last week, Gottlieb booted two field goals, including a 41-yarder, and 3 extra points in a 27-21 win over Butler.
That was certainly a smooth transition.
Isaac Weaver, Andrews, Football
Weaver caught an 89-yard touchdown pass, had a rushing touchdown and intercepted two passes in the undefeated Wildcats’ historic 42-12 win over Murphy. Andrews won its first conference championship in 39 years.
Martin Rivera, Hoggard, Soccer
A senior, Rivera scored the lone goal in Hoggard’s 1-0 double-overtime win over rival New Hanover. Rivera also had a goal in the 20-1-1 Vikings’ 6-0 victory over South Brunswick.
Andrew Attmore, Dudley, Football
Attmore threw six touchdown passes as Dudley overwhelmed Eastern Guilford 51-13 to win the Mid-State 3-A Conference championship.
Grace Mitchener, North Raleigh Christian, Volleyball
The 5-foot-11 senior outside hitter pounded 20 kills and got 18 digs in a 3-0 sweep of Covenant Day. Mitchener has committed to Washington and Lee University.
JyMikaah Wells, Salisbury, Football
It never slows down for Wells, who put six touchdowns on the board in a 53-21 rout of North Rowan. Wells ran for 249 yards and 5 touchdowns for the Hornets. He also returned a kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown.
This is almost becoming routine for the big back.
