Here are the candidates for SBLive’s North Carolina High School Athlete of the Week for April 24-29 as nominated by fans, readers and SBLive’s staff. Katie Neel, Western Harnett, Softball

Neel fired a one-hitter with 18 strikeouts as the Eagles downed E.E. Smith 9-1. For the season, Neal is 7-5 with a 3.15 earned run average and 128 strikeouts in 73 1/3 innings.

Allie Martin, Carson, Girls Soccer

Martin scored three goals in Carson’s 9-0 win over Concord. She also had two goals in a 3-2 win over South Rowan. The sophomore midfielder is tied for the team lead with 18 goals.

Greta Hessenthaler, Southern Alamance, Softball

The Elon recruit smashed a three-run homer in the Patriots’ 6-3 win over Apex. Hessenthaler got on base three times in four trips to the plate.

Bromley Thornton, New Hanover, Baseball

Thornton threw a three-hitter with eight strikeouts as the Wildcats beat Topsail 4-1 to take over first place in the Mideastern 3-A/4-A Conference.

Jaden Parker, St. Pauls, Baseball

Parker’s walk-off, two-run single lifted St. Pauls to a thrilling 4-3 win over West Bladen. The big hit enabled the Bulldogs to remain in second place in the Southeastern Athletic 2-A Conference.

Brandon Bannerman, Heide Trask, Baseball

Bannerman had three hits and three RBIs in the Titans’ crucial 8-5 win over Whiteville. The Titans swept the two-game series, enabling them to pull into a tie with Whiteville for second place in the Waccamaw 1-A/2-A Conference standings.

Noa Grunnow, Wakefield, Softball

Grunnow went 3-for-3 with a double and 4 RBIs as the Wolverines dominated a good Panther Creek team 16-3. The junior infielder is hitting .364.

Holland Giles, Pinecrest, Boys Golf

Giles tied for medalist honors with a 4-under-par 66 in the Pinecrest Invitational at Pinehurst No. 6. His effort helped Pinecrest win the team title.

Steve Huls, Jacksonville, Boys Lacrosse

Huls scored 6 goals in the Cardinals’ 17-9 loss to Croatan to end the regular season. The senior attacker/midfielder leads the Cardinals with 49 goals and 20 assists.

Tanner Leach, Corinth Holders, Boys Track and Field

The senior sprinter ran a blistering 10.55 seconds to win the 100-meter dash in the 2023 Hornet Invitational at Hillside High School in Durham. Leach also turned in a 10.71 second time in the preliminary.
