Torrey Nowell has resigned as the football coach at New Bern after guiding the Bears to the NCHSAA 4-A state championship in December.

Nowell spent four seasons at the helm in New Bern and compiled a 43-7 record, including a perfect 16-0 mark during the 2022 season.

Before coming to New Bern, Nowell coached at Pamlico County and had a 30-24 record from 2015-18 and one appearance in the 1-A state championship game in his final season there.

New Bern downed Grimsley 40-28 to win the school's seventh state football championship last season.

The Bears did not attempt a pass during the game and pounded out 396 rushing yards in their triple option attack.

“I feel like we’ve built this program the right way,” Nowell said during the post-game press conference following the state championship win. “We didn’t do it with transfers, we didn’t do it with all the extra stuff that happens. These kids are New Bern kids. They grew up here, they battled here, they played ball together the whole time. I just love these guys, and I’m super thankful.”
