AKRON, Ohio – The football game between East and Buchtel that was scheduled for Thursday night at Ellet High School has been rescheduled to Saturday at noon at Ellet.

The change came around 3 p.m. on Thursday afternoon due to security concerns after social media posts had circulated about possible violence at the game Thursday night. The teams were informed at that time.

The reason for the shift to Saturday was for the Akron Public Schools to have more security presence at the game than they would have been able to get for Thursday night.

“We can’t afford to put anybody at risk,” Akron Public Schools athletic department assistant Ron Linger told SBLive Sports. “Out of an abundance of caution, we made the decision to move the game to Saturday.”

Linger said the threats of violence had nothing to do with the facility where the game was to be played, but instead centered around the two schools involved in the game.

At the last big sporting event between the two schools, a fight broke out that caused their Division II boys basketball district semifinal to be halted with Buchtel leading 53-32 with just seconds to play in the third quarter. Buchtel was eventually awarded the win and advanced with a number of their players being suspended.

East enters the game 4-3 and has won four games in a row, while Buchtel is 3-4 and on a three-game winning streak. Both teams are 2-0 in Akron City Series play.
