Honoring the top Oklahoma baseball players

Another high school baseball season is in the books in Oklahoma. Now, it’s time to honor those players who made the season memorable.

We have named a player, coach and newcomer of the year as well as picked first- and second-team all-state teams.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Jackson Holliday | Stillwater | SR

Though the Pioneers fell short of reaching the 6A state tournament, Holliday turned in a season to remember. He registered 89 hits, setting a national record, and batted .685 with a 1.392 slugging percentage. Holliday hit 17 home runs and 29 doubles, drove in 79 runs and stole 30 bases.

COACH OF THE YEAR

Grant Oliver | Duncan

Oliver had been an assistant for the Demons before being promoted to the head job last summer. But in his initial season as coach, Oliver led Duncan to its first-ever state championship as the Demons beat two teams that had won at least 30 games; Collinsville in the 5A semifinals and Piedmont for the 5A title. Duncan finished the title run with a 29-7 record, winning 13 of its last 14 ballgames.

NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR

Brayson Carter | Blanchard | FR

Primarily an outfielder, Carter had a very good first season for the Lions, batting .439 with 38 RBIs for a Blanchard squad which eventually captured the 4A title. He also provided the finishing touches on that championship, scoring the title-winning run on Brennan Milligan’s walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh in Blanchard’s 6-5 win against Tuttle.

FIRST TEAM

Pitchers

Brennan Phillips | Owasso | SR

A left-hander, Phillips played a vital role in the Rams’ run to the Class 6A championship. He went 8-1 on the season with a 1.04 earned run average. Phillips, an Oklahoma State signee, also struck out 120 batters and walked just 12 in 67 innings.

Weston Rouse | Fort Gibson | JR

An Oklahoma State commit, Rouse ended his junior season with an impressive 0.46 ERA for a Tiger squad that reached the 4A state tournament. A left-hander, Rouse had a 7-0 record and struck out 98 batters in 49 1/3 innings, allowing just 16 walks.

Kyle Mantooth | Mustang | SR

Mantooth went 8-0 on the mound this past season for the Broncos. He struck out 64 batters in 52 1/3 innings while turning in a 1.47 ERA.

Logan Lunceford | Edmond Santa Fe | SR

Lunceford’s performance on the hill helped the Wolves make it all the way to the 6A championship game. He went 9-0 with a 1.26 ERA, and struck out 98 batters in 49 2/3 innings. He was selected as the Pitcher of the Year in the Central Oklahoma Athletic Conference.

Brennan Milligan | Blanchard | SR

Milligan went 10-0 with a 1.05 ERA for the eventual 4A state champion Lions, and also struck out 66 batters in 53 innings. But his most important play didn’t come on the mound, as it was Milligan’s walk-off RBI single in the bottom of the seventh of the 4A title game which clinched the championship for the Lions.

Catchers

Jaxon Gless | Blanchard | SR

The Oklahoma signee ended his career with the Lions on top as a mainstay for the 4A state champions. Gless hit .438 with five home runs and drove in 41 runs. He also had an on-base percentage of .587 and a slugging average of .760.

Dempsey Gillman | Metro Christian | SR

Gillman batted .455 with an on-base average of .605. He also recorded 22 extra-base hits, seven of those being home runs along with 13 doubles. Gillman, who will play at Murray State College in Tishomingo next season, drove in 39 runs.

Infielders

Jackson Holliday | Stillwater | SR

The ultra-talented shortstop batted .685 with 17 home runs and 79 RBIs. Holliday, the son of former Major League Baseball player Matt Holliday, had committed to play at Oklahoma State, but is projected to be a high pick in the upcoming Major League Baseball draft, even possibly being the No. 1 overall choice.

Jarrett Flaggert | Choctaw | SR

Flaggert was one of the top power hitters in Class 6A. He had 18 home runs and 54 RBIs while turning in a .967 slugging percentage. Flaggert, who is headed to Wichita State, also hit .446 with an on-base percentage of .556.

Jackson Smith | Owasso | SR

Smith hit .441 with 10 homers and 46 RBIs for the 6A champion Rams. He had an on-base average of .535 and a slugging average of .892 while registering 45 hits and scoring 39 runs.

Caden Powell | Clinton | SR

The Oklahoma signee had quite a senior year to remember. He was the football team’s quarterback in helping guide the Red Tornadoes to the state title. Then on the diamond, Powell had an impressive offensive showing as he batted .659 with 11 home runs. He drove in 68 runs as well.

Camden Bates | Washington | JR

The Tennessee commit played an integral role in the Warriors’ run to the 3A state championship. Bates turned in a .460 batting average while hitting seven home runs. He drove in 37 runs as well.

Outfielders

Austin Lemon | Heritage Hall | JR

An Oklahoma State commit, Lemon hit .584 with a .981 slugging percentage along with an on-base average of .669. Of his 61 base hits, 19 went for doubles, five were triples and six more went for home runs. Lemon had 39 RBIs and stole 34 bases as well.

Ty Chaddrick | Tuttle | SR

Chaddrick turned in a strong season for a Tigers squad that made it to the Class 4A championship game. He batted .410 and homered five times while driving in 37 runs. Chaddrick also stole 48-of-49 bases and scored 70 runs as the Tigers’ leadoff hitter.

Owen Tracy | Edmond Memorial | SR

Tracy batted .443 with 10 home runs and 55 RBIs as he helped lead the Bulldogs to the 6A state tournament. He was also selected as the Offensive Player of the Year in the Central Oklahoma Athletic Conference.

Solo Skalnik | Owasso | SR

Skalnik was one of the top bats for a Rams squad that claimed the Class 6A state title as he batted .367. He turned in a slugging percentage of .747 along with 14 home runs and 36 RBIs. He has committed to play next season at Eastern Oklahoma State College.

Kaiden Ashton | Sapulpa | SR

Ashton had a stellar season for a Chieftain squad which reached the 5A semifinals. He batted .432 with seven home runs and 47 RBIs, as well as hitting 17 doubles and two triples. Ashton also scored 57 runs and stole 20 bases.

Utility

Kyler Proctor | Silo | JR

Proctor was a dominating force both at the plate and on the mound for a Rebels squad which finished 30-0, capped by winning the 2A championship. He had a .865 slugging percentage and homered seven times while scoring 53 runs. Proctor, an Oklahoma State commit, also won six games as a pitcher and struck out 68 in 38 1/3 innings while posting a microscopic 0.18 ERA.

Landon Bunch | Collinsville | SR

Bunch played second base and pitched for a Cardinals squad that reached the 5A semifinals. He batted .479 with an on-base average of .548, driving in 48 runs. Bunch also won seven games on the mound, striking out 50 batters in 40 2/3 innings.

SECOND TEAM

Pitchers

Alex Conover | Tuttle | JR

Conover went 8-1 and even recorded a pair of saves for the eventual Class 4A runner-up. He had a 2.05 ERA and struck out 87 batters in 51 innings.

Brannon Westmoreland | Haskell | JR

Westmoreland finished his junior season with a 10-0 record and an ERA of 0.64. He struck out 114 batters and issued just 12 walks in 65 1/3 innings.

Tallen Bagwell | Roff | JR

Bagwell was a driving force behind the Tigers’ run to the Class B championship. He finished the title season 9-0 with a 1.76 ERA, striking out 66 batters in 43 2/3 innings.

Si Collins | Pryor | JR

Collins turned in an undefeated season for the Tigers, going 10-0 with an 0.81 ERA. He struck out 62 batters in 52 innings, and held opponents to a .168 average.

Jack James | Jenks | SR

James had seven wins and a save for a Trojan squad that reached the 6A state tournament. In 57 innings, he struck out 97 batters while putting together a 1.23 ERA.

Catchers

Duncan Key | Edmond Deer Creek | SR

Key helped lead the Antlers to the 6A semifinals. He finished his senior season batting .431 with a .722 slugging percentage. Key recorded 62 hits, including nine triples, and drove in 48 runs.

Jack Wilkins | Salina | JR

Wilkins turned in a strong season for the Wildcats, who reached the 3A semifinals. He batted .461 with an on-base average of .591 while recording 47 hits, eight of those going for doubles.

Infielders

Gage Gilchrist | Oklahoma Christian School | SR

A Murray State commit, Gilchrist was one of the top hitters in the Oklahoma City area. He batted .528 with 12 home runs and 58 RBIs for the Saints. Gilchrist had an on-base average of .643 and had 56 hits, including 20 singles and doubles apiece.

Easton Ford | Silo | JR

Ford batted .506 with an on-base average of .608 and a slugging percentage of .901. He had the exact same number of hits and RBIs with 41, along with six home runs.

Jaxon Willits | Fort Cobb-Broxton | JR

An Oklahoma commit, Willits batted .483 with five home runs and drove in 32 runs to help the Mustangs reach the Class B championship game.

Phoenix Meza | Choctaw | SR

Meza, an Oklahoma State commit, batted .449 with a .562 on-base average and a .785 slugging percentage. Of his 48 hits, five went for home runs and six went for triples. Using speed to his advantage, Meza accumulated 26 stolen bases and scored 48 runs.

Keaton Campbell | Sand Springs | SR

Campbell hit .420 along with a .656 slugging percentage. He hit six home runs and drive in 42 runs while scoring 45 more.

Outfielders

Jaxon Holland | Midwest City Carl Albert | SR

Holland, a Cameron University commit, finished his senior season batting .411 with an on-base average of .522 and a .579 slugging percentage. He had 44 hits, 39 runs scored and stole 42 bases, which set a single-season school record.

Drew McCutchen | Bethany | SR

For the Bronchos, McCutchen turned in a .424 average. He also connected on four home runs and drove in 44 runs.

Bryson Brooksher | Duncan | JR

Brooksher was a key cog in the Demons’ run to their first state title in program history when they captured the Class 5A crown in May. He had an on-base average of .509 and scored 55 runs while driving in 28 more. Brooksher also hit four home runs.

Cole Riggs | Piedmont | SR

Riggs batted .451 with a .579 on-base average for a Wildcat squad which won 34 ballgames and reached the 5A title game. The Kansas Wesleyan commit also scored 47 runs while driving in 22 more, and registered 46 base hits.

Brex Caldwell | Red Oak | SO

Caldwell, an Oklahoma State commit, batted a team-high .442 along with an on-base percentage of .565 and a .756 slugging percentage. He hit six homers and drove in 32 runs and was also one of the team’s top pitchers during the Eagles’ run to the Class A championship.

Utility

Brett McComas | Edmond Deer Creek | SR

McComas hit .460 with three homers and 47 RBIs for the Antlers. A Cowley College signee, McComas had 57 base hits and even had four sacrifice flies.

Avery Ortiz | Tulsa Union | JR

Ortiz led 6A players in several offensive categories, including on-base percentage (.616) and slugging percentage (1.078). He also hit 17 homers and drove in 47 runs while batting .456.
