Jersey Giant: Bixby state champion football player, wrestler ready to go add even more gold

The morning after helping Bixby win its eighth state football championship in nine years, Jersey Robb had already moved on to wrestling, working out with the team and preparing for his first match of the season.

Just 12 hours earlier on the night of Dec. 2, Robb led the Spartans on defense at linebacker with 12 tackles, including two solo and a half for a loss of one yard in the Spartans’ 69-6 domination of Owasso in the Class 6AI state football championship. He also scored one offensive touchdown at running back in the game, which was played in Edmond.

Since then, the Oklahoma State wrestling signee has accomplished a lot on the mat as he and his teammates gear up with the postseason around the corner, starting with all-state duals next weekend in Enid.

Robb, who is wrestling at 215 pounds this season, has been a champion in sports all throughout high school.

While he has been a crucial part of a state championship team on the gridiron, the Spartan is also a two-time state champion on the mat after finishing as a state semifinalist in his freshman campaign.

With more than 100 career match wins under his belt, he plans to end his senior year with a third consecutive title, and with a stout, strong, and muscled-up body that can squat 675 pounds, Robb is on pace to do it.

Penned Cowboy

Robb signed to wrestle with Oklahoma State in November after making a verbal commitment one year earlier.

“It is awesome. It was really awesome to put it in the paper and make it official,” Robb said. “We have a great recruiting class and I’m excited to be a part of it. We’re going to bring some national titles back to Gallagher-Iba (Arena).”

And that would add to the 34 the program currently has. The Cowboys last brought home a national championship in 2006.

“I’d been going to OSU duals since I can remember," Robb said. "All my favorite wrestlers were there when I was little. I always thought, man, I could be wrestling here, and now, I’m going to have a chance to.”

Although Robb attended matches in Stillwater growing up, he was not a Cowboy sports fan. He is originally from Norman, then moved to Tulsa going into his freshman year.

“I was pretty much die-hard crimson and cream (Oklahoma's colors). When I committed, I made the switch to being an OSU fan,” he said.

The Bixby senior wrestler has met OSU head coach John Smith.

”He’s awesome,” Robb said. “He’s a super fine dude. He runs a tight ship. You can see why all those guys are super good. They always get better.

"They got a great coaching staff up there with Espo (head assistant coach Zack Esposito) and (assistant coach Chris Perry), and (recruiting coordinator Tyler Caldwell), they do an awesome job.”

Robb will join former Spartan teammate Zach Blankenship, who is now at OSU after graduating last year as a three-time high school state champion. He has made it into the Pokes’ starting lineup and Robb intends to do the same thing when he arrives on campus next season.

“The goal is to make it into the lineup. I want to battle the competition in the room, that’s why I chose OSU,” he said.

Robb chose OSU over Wyoming, Arizona State and OU.

“Once I had been up to OSU, I knew that was the place I was going to be,” he added.

Out to win it all

For now, Robb is focused on his goals with the Spartans.

He won the state gold medal last year at 195 pounds, when he beat Eli Cordy of Edmond Memorial in a 7-6 decision, finishing off an unscathed match record of 33-0.

Becoming a three-time state champion would mean a lot to the OSU-bound wrestler.

“You just fall in love with the process and the accomplishments that come with it,” he said.

But Robb wants his teammates to join him in winning individual titles, both those who won in previous years, as well as those who haven’t won one before, so that Bixby can finish No. 1, both at dual state and the Class 6A state tourney.

The Spartans placed third in the team standings (90.5 points) at last year’s state tournament.

“It was good to get on the podium as a team, but that’s not our goal,” Robb said. “Our goal is to win state titles, win national titles; so, it was a good step in the right direction, but that is not what we’re shooting for.

“We have a lot of guys on our team, looking to become state champions and multi-state champions. That’s just kind of the culture out here.”
