Oklahoma 2A-4A girls basketball postseason recap: Big matchups await in area championship games

Regional playoffs wrapped up this past weekend for girls basketball teams in Classes 2A through 4A. 

The following is a recap of the regional action, along with a look-ahead to the area tournaments taking place later this week.

Class 4A

Class 4A will feature a big-time area championship match-up in Area I between No. 3 Bethany and No. 5 Weatherford this Friday at Hennessey.

The Lady Bronchos beat Bristow by 29 points, while Weatherford is coming off a win over the defending state champs from Classen SAS.

Classen will face an Elgin team that knocked off Cushing and Bishop McGuinness in the regional consolation bracket. Bristow will face Woodward, who survived a close game against Elk City.

Top-ranked Tulsa Lincoln Christian and Wagoner will play for the Area II title in Stroud on Friday night after both teams got through regionals over the weekend. The Area II consolation bracket will feature Ada taking on Locust Grove, plus OKC Harding Charter facing a Harrah team that just escaped Newcastle in the regional consolation bracket on Saturday.

After a dominant win against Tecumseh on Saturday, No. 2 Tuttle will head to the Area III championship game against No. 6 Verdigris. Tecumseh prepares to face Muldrow in the area consolation bracket.

Plainview squeaked past Cache in its regional consolation title game over the weekend, and the Lady Indians will now play Stillwell.

Inola knocked off No. 4 Kingfisher by one in the regional championship game over the weekend, earning the Lady Longhorns a date with Fort Gibson in the Area IV title game at Noble on Saturday. Kingfisher will now face Sallisaw, while Oologah will take on Anadarko.

Class 3A

In Area I, top-ranked Washington beat KIPP Tulsa to advance to the area championship game against Luther, which beat Alva by four. Alva will now face Berryhill, while KIPP faces Perry.

Bethel, ranked No. 2 in the final rankings, took care of business against Sperry in the winner's bracket of its regional in Kellyville, and the Lady Wildcats will now face Silo, who hung on barely against Hugo before topping Purcell for the regional championship.

Lone Grove beat Hugo to top that regional’s consolation bracket, and the Lady Longhorns will face Sperry, while Purcell takes on Holdenville.

The fourth-ranked Idabel Lady Warriors, last year’s runners-up, looked unstoppable in their regional, beating Spiro and Eufaula by an average of 21.5 points. They’ll head to the Area III title game against No. 8 Kingston after the Lady Redskins earned a seven-point win against Marlow.

Marlow will now face the Roland Lady Rangers, who were upset in their opening game at their home regional against Eufaula and had to go through the consolation bracket, topping Stigler. Eufaula will face Lindsay, which went through its consolation bracket earning tough wins over Atoka and Dickson before crushing Davis, 40-17.

The defending state champions from Jones destroyed the competition at their regional over the weekend, beating Millwood by 27 and Morris by 36. The Lady Longhorns head to the Area IV title game against No. 5 Kiefer, who beat Adair by two in their winner's bracket regional championship.

Adair now plays Tulsa Central, while Morris faces Sequoyah-Tahlequah.

Class 2A

No. 3 ranked Merritt destroyed Fairview to win its regional championship, as did Hooker, and the two will meet in the Area I championship in Enid.

Fairview will play Pawhuska, while Hobart will play Afton.

Amber-Pocasset beat local rival Minco by 15 to advance to the Area II championship. Their opponent will be No. 8 Howe, who had to fight just to beat No. 9 Oktaha in the regional, 59-58.

Central Sallisaw won its consolation bracket by beating Hulbert, and will face Minco, while Oktaha will play Walters.

Top-ranked Dale sent a strong message at its home regional, beating Cashion, 83-50. The Lady Pirates will play in the Area III championship against Colcord, who beat Fairland in the regionals.

Fairland will play in the consolation bracket against Christian Heritage, while Cashion will take on Warner, who survived a 50-48 nail-biter against Nowata.

Perhaps the biggest upset of the weekend in Class 2A was No. 18 Hartshorne beating defending state champion Pocola. Hartshorne will head to the area championship against Preston, who topped Okemah.

Okemah will now play Healdton, while Pocola will play a Pawnee team coming off a 38-35 win against Rejoice Christian.
