Tulsa Union uncommitted 2025 QB Shaker Reisig can now focus on much-hyped return to Jenks

Former Trojans signal-caller now at Union a major storyline for this week's 'Backyard Bowl'

TULSA, Oklahoma - Shaker Reisig had an outstanding night in Tulsa Union’s 27-17 victory against Broken Arrow Friday night at Union-Tuttle Stadium.

Reisig produced phenomenal numbers as he threw four touchdown passes and 313 yards, completing 27-of-35 attempts. He has the attention of Division I programs and rumor has it he has an offer.

“I started off a little slow, but we got it turned around in that first drive,” Reisig said. “The offense started clicking and we did good after that. I thought I did good overall, but there are things I need to improve on.”

The next big test that awaits the Union star junior is a date at Jenks this coming Friday in the annual "Backyard Bowl." It will be personal for Reisig as he returns for the first time since playing there as a freshman in 2021.

That year, Reisig led Jenks to a 30-15 win against Union in the 2021 Class 6AI state football championship game. He also beat the Redhawks earlier that season in the "Backyard Bowl" game that was played at Union.

FLASHBACK TO TROJAN TIME

Looking back on that Saturday afternoon in December two years ago, Reisig rallied the Trojans from a 15-0 deficit after Union got off to a hot start. He scored two rushing TDs.

One a 26-yarder that gave Jenks seven points before halftime. The other was from 2 yards that drew the eventual ‘21 state champion to within two points (the point-after try failed).

Jenks got two more TDs on an offensive fumble recovery in the end zone and an interception return, along with a field goal.

Reisig, along with his then-teammates, was a state champion.

Then that offseason, he transferred to the school he led the Trojans to beat, not only that, to the arch-rival, where he had success in the pro set offense last year leading the Redhawks’ to a 12-1 finish as a state semifinalist.

Which included a 38-3 win against Jenks in the "Backyard Bowl" in September, also taking place at Union.

Reisig remarked he has kept in touch with his former Trojan teammates.

“I do sometimes, yeah,” Reisig said.

BACK TO THE FUTURE

This edition won’t be a battle of unbeatens as most Union-Jenks matchups usually are.

While the Redhawks are 2-0 after dominating Westmoore, 49-7, and a hard-fought win against Broken Arrow, the Trojans are 0-2 after coming up short in rally attempts against Edmond Santa Fe (27-26) and Owasso (34-28) and will be hungry for an upset, in addition to their first win and avoid going 0-3 in 2023.

Plus, they’ll be looking to avenge that loss to Union last year, with Reisig throwing two TD passes in the game.

“We got to play good,” Reisig said, in regard to the matchup. “They’re a good team all-around. We’re going to have to play good all the way around. If we did that, we’ll be good.”

Reisig is not the only former Trojan who will be in a Union uniform at Allan Trimble Stadium later this week. Junior running back Jordan Schelling (5-foot-9, 200 pounds), who impacted Jenks last year, will be alongside him.

“He’s super excited to play. He and I are super close,” Reisig said about Schelling. “He is a great athlete. He is a baller. He can play football.

"So, I’m excited for him and we’re all excited to go over there and play.”

What will be interesting is what kind of environment will Jenks fans provide when Reisig, Schelling, and company arrive.

“It is definitely exciting. I’ve been looking forward to it since the offseason. So I’m super excited, I’m ready to go,” Reisig said.

BROKEN ARROW RECAP

Reisig threw two TD passes to Jino Boyd of 12 and 5, the first which tied the game after Broken Arrow freshman Octavia Roberson ran for a 71-yard TD that gave his team the initial 7-0 lead.

Following a BA field goal, Reisig tossed a 4-yard TD to Brendon McQueen that put Union ahead 14-10.

A Tiger TD made on an offensive fumble recovery by Kayleb Barnett in the end zone, which seemed controversial at the time, but later could be seen on TV replays, put BA ahead, 17-14, at halftime.

“It definitely motivated us for sure,” Reisig said. “We came out ready to play in the second half.”

Union shut out BA in the second half as Reisig threw a 37-yarder to Schelling in the end zone for the go-ahead score in the third and his second to Boyd for the eventual clincher. The PAT failed after the Schelling TD.

The Tiger defense did stop Union at the goal line on the first possession of the game.

“They came out and played their best against us. Props to them. But we got some stuff to fix. We’ll be better next week,” Reisig said.
