Top 25 Oklahoma high school football rankings (10/25/2023)

No serious movement, though No. 2 Midwest City Carl Albert survives No. 6 Guthrie

Once again, there was not much movement in the SBLive Oklahoma Top 25 football rankings. 

Despite losing to No. 2 Midwest City Carl Albert, Guthrie remained at No. 6.

However, Tulsa Bishop Kelley and Coweta enter the rankings as Edmond Santa Fe and Westmoore bow out.

Claremore and Collinsville actually swapped spots after the Zebras were upset by Kelley. Teams on the lower end of the list did move up one spot.

Here is this week's SBLive Oklahoma Top 25. 

1. Bixby (8-0 overall, 5-0 in District 6AI-1)

Previous Game: Beat Westmoore, 78-28

Ranking Last Week: No. 1

The Spartans scored more than 70 points for the third time this season and did it to the Jaguars again after doing it last year.

But the first half was different as Westmoore provided a challenge, playing to within 15 points, 36-21, at halftime.

It was the first time any opponent scored this year against Bixby. who was up 29-7 through the first period and 36-7 in the second before a determined Jaguars' squad drew within 15 points before the half.

But the Spartans’ experience bore down in the second half, dominating with a 42-7 run.

Bixby totaled 537 yards of offense while scoring its second-highest point total of the year, yet giving up the most points in a game this year.

Carson Kirby threw three touchdowns, Jett Turner scored two TDs, Kordell Gouldsby ran a punt back for a TD, and Cooper Parker added two more rushing TDs.

2. MWC Carl Albert (9-0, 5-0 in District 5A-2)

Previous Game: Beat Guthrie, 24-21

Ranking Last Week: No. 2

The reigning Class 5A state champion passed a major test with a victory over Guthrie, who had only given up one field goal in its previous seven games.

But the Titans did have to overcome a pair of deficits to the Blue Jays as they fell behind 14-0 and 21-17.

Kevin Sperry hooked up with Marcus James for two TDs. The first was a 45-yarder that got CA on the board with 47 seconds left before halftime. The second was a 5-yard pass on fourth-and-goal that proved to be the game-winner.

A 21-yard TD by Robinson gave the Titans a 17-14 lead in the fourth quarter, which was set up by a blocked punt the Titans made.

The Titans get to enjoy an off-week this week, before closing out the regular season against Piedmont, currently in a three-way tie for second place with No. 6 Guthrie and Oklahoma City Bishop McGuinness.

3. Tulsa Union (7-1, 5-0 in District 6AI-2)

Previous Game: Beat Edmond Santa Fe, 31-10

Ranking Last Week: No. 3

Isaiah Covington was the key player of the game as he scored on a 1-yard run to give the Redhawks a two-TD late in the game. He carried Union on the scoring drive with runs of 33, 22 and 5 yards before scoring the TD. Covington totaled 62 yards on five carries, while Jordan Schelling finished with 123 yards on 26 handoffs.

Covington was also force on defense with 12 solo tackles, including two for loss, and a key interception late in the game.

Freshman Kason Delgado, playing in place of the injured Shaker Reisig for a second straight game, hit Jino Boyd from 47 yards for the game-clincher.

Delgado finished with 133 yards passing on 10-of-18 attempts in the game.

Boston Carrasco scored on the opening kickoff from 93 yards to give the Redhawks a 7-0 lead.

The game was tied 10-10 at halftime.

4. Wagoner (8-0, 5-0 in District 4A-3)

Previous Game: Beat Tulsa McLain, 36-12

Ranking Last Week: No. 4

Kale Charboneau and Vanderbilt commit Witt Edwards did a lot of the work needed in the Bulldogs’ trouncing of the Titans. Charboneau threw four TD passes, three to Edwards and one to tight end Alex Shieldnight, then took another for a pick-six on defense.

Shieldnight caught five passes for 99 yards, Edwards totaled six catches for 82 yards, and Charboneau threw for 281 yards on 19-of-29 passing.

Junior free safety Tres Thornton tied a school record with three interceptions in one game.

Wagoner football facilities undergoing major improvements, but winning remains a primary constant for Bulldogs

5. Washington (8-0, 5-0 in District 2A-3)

Previous Game: Beat Purcell, 40-0

Ranking Last Week: No. 5

The Warriors proved to be the best in their division with a domination of the Dragons.

Next Game: vs. Comanche (1-6, 1-3), Friday

6. Guthrie (7-1, 3-1 in District 5A-2)

Previous Game: Lost to Midwest City Carl Albert, 24-21

Ranking Last Week: No. 6

The Blue Jays came up short in their bid to knock off Carl Albert, the defending Class 5A state champion, but were impressive in their efforts and hold at No. 6 as a result.

Guthrie had outscored its previous seven opponents 317-3, and nearly did the same to the Titans for the first half until CA got its first TD late in the first half, the first TD scored against the Jays’ defense this year,

Guthrie went up 14-0 on a 2-yard plunge by running back Jaylen Harper and a 6-yard TD pass from Hayden Calvert to tight end Eli Plagg.

The Jays later led, 21-17, after a 1-yard run by Calvert.

7. OKC Heritage Hall (7-0, 4-0 in District 3A-2)

Previous Game: Beat Dickson, 57-28

Ranking Last Week: No. 7

The Chargers took command from get-go once again with a 13-0 first quarter lead and were up 43-14 by halftime.

They close the regular season with back-to-back home games against Sulphur and Marlow, who are also contending for the 3A-2 championship.

Next Game: vs. Sulphur (6-2, 5-0), Friday

8. Muskogee (7-1, 5-0 in District 6AII-1)

Previous Game: Beat Tulsa Booker T. Washington, 63-20

Ranking Last Week: No. 8

Kayden McGee took the opening kickoff back 92 yards for a TD and that set the tone in the Roughers’ rout of the Hornets on their Homecoming game.

Muskogee was up 21-0 by the end of the first quarter and was ahead 42-0 by halftime. 

Jamarian Ficklin threw for four TDs and ran for two others.

Muskogee has its last two regular-season games on the road, including next week at defending Class 6AII state champion Stillwater (6-2, 5-0), which could decide the 6AII-1 title as it did in 2022.

9. Poteau (8-0, 5-0 in District 4A-4)

Previous Game: Beat Sallisaw, 28-13

Ranking Last Week: No. 9

The Pirates kept their unbeaten string alive with a win last week against a Sallisaw team that is having a turnaround season.

Now, Poteau must face an Ada squad that is also unbeaten and has scored 48 or more points in its last three games while winning by margins of 34 to 49 points. The winner of this game will be in the driver's seat for the 4A-4 title.

10. Owasso (6-2, 4-1 in District 6AI-2)

Previous Game: Beat Edmond Memorial, 49-42

Ranking Last Week: No. 10

The Rams kept their hopes to host a playoff game alive with a win against the Bulldogs.

They had built up a 28-6 lead in the first quarter but had to hold off a rally the rest of the game.

The Rams were up 35-28 at halftime and 49-35 as the third quarter ended.

Knox Dyson threw two TD passes, one to Deuce Chalk and the other to J’Kharri Thomas; Sammy Dennis and Chris Zaferis scored two TDs each, and Jayden Hall had one TD.

They must win this week at home against Edmond Santa Fe, which is also vying for that spot.

11. Tulsa Lincoln Christian (8-0, 4-0 in District 3A-3)

Previous Game: Beat Stigler, 49-6

Ranking Last Week: No. 11

The Bulldogs stayed unbeaten by taking care of business with a convincing rout of Stigler. Their remaining regular season games are against teams under .500.

Next Game: vs. Muldrow (1-8, 0-5), Friday

12. Jenks (5-3, 4-1 in District 6AI-1)

Previous Game: Beat Southmoore, 40-7

Ranking Last Week: No. 12

The Trojans overcame an early 7-0 hole to the Sabercats and surged to a 27-7 halftime lead before finishing things off with a 33-point victory.

As soon as Southmoore scored, Jenks drew within one point on a 98-yard kickoff return by Corey Foreman. The PAT was missed. Owen Jones threw a 10-yard TD pass to Ayden Christiansen for the go-ahead score, and it was 13-7.

Kaydin Jones and Simian Gilkey added TDs of 2 and 7 yards, respectively, in the second quarter.

Owen Jones threw two more TD passes of 69 and 27 to Christiansen and Foreman, respectively, in the second half. Jones finished with 247 yards on 13-of-19 attempts.

Jenks remains hopeful for a shot at the 6AI-1 title.

13. OKC Millwood (7-1, 5-0 in District 2A-1)

Previous Game: Beat Oklahoma Christian School, 22-20

Ranking Last Week: No. 13

The Falcons rallied from a two-TD deficit for a two-point win to stay unbeaten and knock OCS from the unbeaten ranks.

North Texas commit Micho Lavine recovered an OCS fumble in the end zone for a tying TD.

Junior wide receiver Xzavier Thompson finished with three receptions for 111 yards, and sophomore quarterback C.J. Turnbull threw for 174 yards.

Next Game: vs. Hennessey (0-8, 0-5), Friday

14. Choctaw (5-2, 4-1 in District 6AII-2)

Previous Game: Beat Lawton, 58-6

Ranking Last Week: No. 14

The Yellowjackets have won two in a row since a Week 6 loss to Edmond Deer Creek. They are fighting for at least the chance to host a playoff game at home, if not a district championship.

Next game: vs. Putnam City (3-5, 3-2), Friday

15. Fairview (8-0, 5-0 in District A-1)

Previous Game: Beat Texhoma, 62-14

Ranking Last Week: No. 15

Fairview has won all of its games this year in a convincing manner, and last week against Texhoma was no different.

Next Game: at Burns Flat-Dill City (1-7, 0-5), Friday

16. Hominy (8-0, 5-0 in A-5)

Previous Game: Beat Tonkawa, 13-0

Ranking Last Week: No. 16

The Bucks did not put up a high amount of points, but they still got the job done and pitched a shutout on defense. Now, a battle for the lead in their district lingers this week when they meet Woodland, another unbeaten team.

Next Game: vs. Woodland (8-0, 5-0), Friday

17. Del City (8-0, 5-0 in 5A-3)

Previous Game: Beat Glenpool, 67-0

Ranking Last Week: No. 17

The Eagles ran wild over the Warriors. Next is a battle for the 5A-3 lead and likely the championship against Coweta. The Tigers beat Del City, 18-17, in overtime last year.

Next Game: at Coweta, (6-2, 5-0), Friday

18. Collinsville (7-1, 4-1 in District 5A-4)

Previous Game: Beat Grove, 24-17

Ranking Last Week: No. 19

The Cardinals avenged a 49-21 loss at home to the Ridgerunners last year by beating them by seven points on the road. However, things are different in 2023 as they are one game behind Bishop Kelley, whom they lost to in Week 4, and tied for second with Claremore, whom they meet next week.

Collinsville led 14-10 at halftime and extended it to 21-10 on a 79-yard TD pass from Skyler Moorman to Hudson Henslick. It added a 31-yard field goal from Justice McMath in the fourth quarter.

The Cardinals move up one spot as a result of Claremore’s loss to Bishop Kelley.

Next Game: vs. Tulsa Edison Prep (2-6, 1-4), Friday

19. Claremore (7-1, 4-1 in District 5A-4)

Previous Game: Lost to Tulsa Bishop Kelley, 42-41

Ranking Last Week: No. 18

The Zebras incurred their first place after a loss to Bishop Kelley. They are now in a second-place tie in 5A-4 with Collinsville, whom they play next week, and slide to No. 19 in the poll.

Claremore had a 13-point lead in the fourth quarter before Kelley rallied. A blocked extra point on its last TD made the difference. The Comets quickly scored two TDs with both PATs made.

The Zebras scored three TDs on fourth down and another on a kickoff.

Braxton Etheridge threw two TDs and ran for another, while Tyson Grimmett also scored two rushing TDs.

Next Game: at Tulsa Will Rogers (2-6, 1-4), Friday

20. Ada (8-0, 5-0 in District 4A-4)

Previous Game: Beat Ft. Gibson, 48-14

Ranking Last Week: No. 20

The Cougars forced seven turnovers in their rout of Ft. Gibson.

A major challenge against Poteau for the 4A-4 championship awaits.

Next Game: at Poteau (8-0, 4-0), Friday

21. Elgin (8-0, 5-0, in District 5A-1)

Previous Game: Beat Duncan, 48-7

Ranking Last Week: 22

The Owls, who are up a spot, had no problem dispensing with a winless Duncan squad. Now, some serious games stand in front with Lawton MacArthur this week and Midwest City next week. Win them both and they get the district crown outright and a No. 1 seed in the playoffs.

22. Blanchard (7-1, 5-0 in District 4A-2)

Previous Game: Beat Bridge Creek, 40-10

Ranking Last Week: 23

The Lions, also up a notch, stand alone in first place in their district with their next opponent, Bethany, along with Tuttle and Newcastle all one game behind them tied for second. A win over the Bronchos will clinch at least for them a share of the title since they have already beaten both the Tigers and the Racers, and both play each other this week.

23. Edmond Deer Creek (6-2, 4-0 in District 6AII-2)

Previous Game: Beat OKC Northwest Classen, 43-6

Ranking Last Week: 25

The Antlers shellacked their way through one Oklahoma City school and shouldn’t have a problem going through another as the playoffs get closer.

Next Game: vs. OKC Capitol Hill (1-8, 1-5), Friday

24. Bishop Kelley (6-2, 5-0 in District 5A-4)

Previous Game: Beat Claremore, 42-41

Ranking Last Week: Unranked

The Comets have won six straight since an 0-2 start, including three as underdogs at home against Bishop McGuinness, Collinsville and last week over Claremore. They are now in the driver’s seat for the district championship as a result and will be a No. 1 seed in the Class 5A playoffs if they win out.

In the win against the Zebras, senior quarterback Stice Smith scored a 24-yard TD and threw a 9-yard TD pass to Tyler McGinty to rally his team from a 13-point deficit for the win.

Smith ran for two TDs and passed for three others in the victory.

Next Game: at Tulsa Nathan Hale (0-8, 0-5), Thursday

25. Coweta (6-2, 5-0 in District 5A-3)

Previous Game: Beat Tulsa East Central, 45-12

Ranking Last Week: Unranked

The Tigers are back in the Top 25 for the first time since last year. After losing key starters from last year’s team, there were questions how Coweta would fare.

They lost their first two games, but they have won six straight since and are once again battling Del City for the district title. The Tigers beat the Eagles last year, 18-17, in overtime, on the road and the teams they lost to are ranked in the top 4.
