Oklahoma high school girls basketball Top 25 rankings (1/3/2024)

2-time defending 6A champion Edmond North still rolling along at the top

Now that the holidays are over, the action begins to heat up in Oklahoma high school girls basketball.

Here is the debut of the weekly SBLive Oklahoma Top 25 girls basketball rankings for the 2023-24 season.

1. Edmond North (8-0)

The Lady Huskies haven’t lost a game in more than a year. Despite losing key pieces from their back-to-back 6A championship teams, they return a solid core led by Creighton commit Allison Heathcock and Kate Melton.

Until someone actually knocks them off their perch, it’s hard to put anyone ahead of them. That was on display as they rolled to a third straight Mustang Holiday Classic championship.

2. Putnam City West (7-0)

If it had been possible to put PCW at 1B, that designation would fit perfectly for the Lady Patriots. They took Edmond North to the brink in the 6A semifinals last year, but their youth and inexperience cost them. They return almost every key player, including OU signee Caya Smith.

Their most impressive victory may have come against Grind Prep Academy at the annual Sick of Sickle Cell Invitational. But with the PCI Tournament and the Jenks-Union Invite ahead of them, we will start to get a better idea of just how good West is.

3. Bethany (6-2)

The Lady Bronchos might have been ranked a notch or two higher a week ago. But they fell to Edmond North in a head-to-head match-up at the Mustang Holiday Classic.

They still have one of the most talented backcourts in the state with Zya Vann and Keziah Lofton, and are the favorites to take home the 4A title again. But there are a few teams looking to knock them off.

4. El Reno (7-0)

El Reno quietly started the season at 7-0. Their closest game was a 13-point victory over Midwest City Carl Albert in the opener. Outside of the Titans, they haven’t played some of the state’s premier teams yet. But that could change at the upcoming Anadarko or Shawnee tournaments.

5. Edmond Memorial (8-1)

After losing their season opener, the Bulldogs have been on a run that has included wins over Owasso and Tulsa Booker T. Washington. However, their biggest win came in the Tournament of Champions finale in which they knocked off Lincoln Christian, 47-45.

6. Lincoln Christian (8-2)

Last season’s 4A runner-up has gotten off to a fast start again this campaign. However, losses to Stilwell and Edmond Memorial mean they have already equaled their total defeats from a season ago.

Sophomore Maddi Stewart has set the pace for the Bulldogs, averaging 14 points and eight rebounds a game.

7. Tahlequah (9-1)

At 9-1, the Tigers have cruised through the first part of their schedule. A loss to Lincoln Christian at the Tournament of Champions is their only blemish. Tahlequah has outscored its opponents by almost 150 points through 10 games.

However, with two games against Tulsa Booker T. Washington still to come, they will have to continue playing at a high level to take home the 5A District 3 championship.

8. Owasso (7-1)

The Rams swept through the Bishop Kelley tournament last month with three convincing wins over three solid teams in Del City, Mustang and Sand Springs. They won the tourney championship by outscoring their opponents, 149-100, in the process.

Their lone loss came to Edmond Memorial, which was a five-point affair that went into overtime.

9. Tulsa Booker T. Washington (7-2)

The Hornets have two defeats so far this season. They were by a total of six points to Edmond Memorial and Tahlequah, which was at the THS Invitational. Because they are now in the same district, Booker T. will face Tahlequah twice more in the coming months.

10. Midwest City Carl Albert (9-1)

Despite being 9-1, the Lady Titans sit in third place in their district behind El Reno and Shawnee. In their one head-to-head matchup amongst the top three, El Reno knocked them off, 63-50, in the season opener. However, they do have wins over Bethel, Tuttle and Washington.

11. Midwest City (6-1)

It took an epic performance by one of the best players in the state to hand Midwest City its only loss of the season. If Norman’s Keeley Parks doesn’t explode for 51 points at the Joe Lawson Invitational, the Lady Bombers could still be undefeated.

Senior Deyanna Douglas continues to be a force in the middle as she racks up double-doubles. She currently has 648 career rebounds, which is a program record.

12. Anadarko (9-0)

Coach Kirk Graham has his Lady Warriors entering 2024 undefeated and smashing their competition. In nine games, they have outscored their opponents, 544-205. That includes beating Weatherford, 59-20.

Along with their own tournament, Anadarko should see stiffer competition at the Heart of Oklahoma Tournament later this month.

13. Dale (10-0)

The Lady Pirates have cruised through the first half of the regular season with relative ease. Their closest game was a 51-46 victory over Preston in the opener.

Since then, no team has come within 14 points of the defending 2A champions. With Gracee Waller and Teague Muncy leading the charge, they are in line to defend their crown.

14. Seiling (7-2)

It was a tough week for Seiling. The two-time defending Class A champions suffered back-to-back losses at the Holiday Classic in Mustang. After being stunned by host Mustang (6A), they were throttled, 89-59, by Bethany (4A).

All three of their losses in the past two seasons have come at the same tournament.

15. Idabel (11-1)

Inside the state of Oklahoma, the Warriors are undefeated on the season. However, their lone loss to Bethany (4A) was in the Tournament of Champions at Fort Smith, Arkansas. Since then, Idabel has been on a tear, picking up wins against Sapulpa (5A), OKC Douglass (4A) and Bixby (6A).

16. Choctaw (6-0)

Coming off a 43-39 victory over Bixby right before the holiday break, the Yellowjackets moved to 6-0 on the season. Katelyn Davis and Brooke Curry have helped Choctaw to a blistering start despite playing in a district that will see them traveling to the Tulsa area for the majority of their road games.

17. Sapulpa (7-3)

Averaging 15 points and 11 rebounds, senior Tyla Heard is doing what she can to get the Chieftans back to the 5A title game. However, a trip to Arkansas saw Sapulpa drop a pair of games at the Tournament of Champions. That includes getting run, 77-53, by Idabel (3A).

Their only other loss came to Lincoln Christian (3A) at Oklahoma’s Tournament of Champions.

18. Bixby (5-2)

Despite playing just seven games, the Lady Spartans have had to face a strong early season schedule. That includes traveling down to the Idabel Winter Classic, where they took second after losing, 50-43, to the Warriors.

19. Howe (10-1)

At the Bill Frye Invitational Tournament in Arkansas, the Lady Lions suffered their first defeat of the season. It came against host Mansfield, which means they are undefeated against teams inside Oklahoma.

With Karsyn Nye leading the charge, Howe will look to continue its strong play in the second half of the season.

20. Washington (10-1)

The Warriors were riding a 10-game win streak to start the season before dropping a nail-biter to Carl Albert (5A). Washington came into the year with designs on taking home its first state title since 2007, and are still on a path to make it happen.

21. Moore (6-2)

The Lady Lions could be a sleeper this year in Class 6A. But at this point, it’s impossible to tell just how good they can be. They are 2-2 against teams in 6A.

However, defeats to Norman North and Westmoore were relatively close.

22. Sand Springs (5-2)

Coach Joshua Berry and his Lady Sandites started the season off by knocking off Edmond Memorial in the season opener, 41-33. They then turned around and lost their only game to Owasso, 53-45.

Despite not having KiAryn Taylor, strong play from Tianna Butler and Aaliyah Simone has shown Sand Springs can compete with the top teams in 6A.

23. Stilwell (6-1)

Senior point guard Snowda Watie, who is averaging 14 points and six assists per game, has got the Lady Indians off to a strong start. Their one defeat came against Locust Grove (4A) right before the Christmas break.

Stilwell will get a huge test to start 2024 when the Lady Indians face Owasso (6A) in the opening game of the Lincoln Christian Tournament.

24. Tuttle (7-1)

Despite graduating Landry Allen to the University of Oklahoma, the Lady Tigers have picked up where they left off last year behind the stellar play of Oklahoma Baptist University commit Allie Rehl, who is averaging 18 points a night.

Along with playing in a tough Lincoln Christian Tournament, the Lady Tigers have games against Bethany and Anadarko still ahead of them.

25. Dover (11-0)

The top team in Class B has been on an absolute tear. Through 11 games, the Longhorns have outscored their opponents, 711-267. While they have yet to play any team outside Class B or A, what they have been able to do can’t be ignored as they seek to win their first title since 2005.
