Everest Sutton halfway to joining Crescent Valley's 4-time champions club: Oregon (OSAA) wrestling 106-pounds roundup

“I grew up in Oregon all my life, and I’d always wanted to win a high school state championship. I’m really excited.”

A year ago, Crescent Valley’s Everest Sutton won his first Class 5A state wrestling title amidst the craziness that the COVID-19 pandemic brought upon high school sports.

Things returned mostly to normal last weekend for Sutton’s second trip to the state meet. No, the championships were not at their traditional home at Memorial Coliseum — the state’s 5A teams headed east to Ridgeview High School in Redmond for Saturday’s compressed one-day schedule — but the medals said OSAA state champion on them, which meant something to Sutton.

“I grew up in Oregon all my life, and I’d always wanted to win a high school state championship,” Sutton said after pinning hometown favorite Billy Jackson of Redmond in 1 minute, 38 seconds, in the 106-pound final. “I’m really excited.”

Sutton is now halfway toward his goal of joining the recent cavalcade of Crescent Valley four-time state champions, with two more joining the ranks Saturday night

“Now, I’ve got to get two more under my belt,” Sutton said. “Next year and the year after.”

4A: Sweet Home sophomore Kyle Sieminski bagged his second state title, pinning La Grande’s Mason Wolcott with 32 seconds left in the second round. Sweet Home has never had a four-time state champion.

3A: Harrisburg’s Luke Cheek won a battle of freshmen against Burns’ Canon Winn, earning a 4-2 decision. Of Cheek’s five losses this season, three were to wrestlers who placed at the 6A or 5A state meet.

2A/1A: Another sophomore who’s halfway to becoming a four-time state champion is Illinois Valley’s Michael Miller, who capped his second title run with a 6-3 decision over Harley Hardison of Lowell.

6A: Roseburg sophomore Gage Singleton halfway to 4-time state wrestling champion status
