Senior Hunter Harwood knew his Thurston team was chasing bonus points as it hoped to catch Crook County for second place in the team standings at Saturday’s Class 5A state wrestling meet at Ridgeview High School in Redmond.

Harwood, who finished second at this weight class (152) in June, did his part for the Colts by pinning Ridgeview’s Daniel Jaramillo in 1:35 to win his first title.

“That’s just my style to go out and get pins,” said Harwood, who finished the season 38-3 with 28 pins, including all four of his matches at state. “It was just an added bonus that it helped our team points.”

Harwood acknowledged feeling “really nervous going into the match, more nervous than I thought I would be.”

“But I was way happier than I thought I would be when it was over,” he quickly added. “I’ve been working for this for a really long time. It feels absolutely amazing.”

Jaramillo was the only Raven to wrestle for a title on his home mat. The senior finished the season 36-10.

4A: Ontario senior Ruben Hernandez won his school’s first title in the past seven years, pinning North Marion’s Landen Wing 45 seconds into the second round. Francisco Barrera won the Tigers’ previous title in 2015.

3A: Burns junior Hunter Kemper moved up from second at 152 a year ago to win the title this winter, defeating Rainier’s Logan Chapman 6-3 in the final.

2A/1A: Senior Justin Hodge of Grant Union/Prairie City knocked off top seed and 2021 runner-up Wyatt Patzke of Lakeview 16-13 to win his first title. Patzke finished fourth, third and second twice in his four state appearances.
