Local stars Lamar Washington, Jackson Shelstad take on Team USA in Nike Hoop Summit scrimmage
PORTLAND, Ore. — Texas Tech-bound forward Lamar Washington, a Portland native and standout at AZ Compass Prep, dribbled three quarter the length of the quarter, rose up, released a deep 3 and beat the buzzer with his signature left-hand.
West Linn (Ore.) junior Jackson Shelstad, an Oregon commit and top-ranked prospect in the state, showed poise controlling the pace while being checked, sometimes full court, by Baylor-bound Keyonte George, a consensus top five recruit in the country.
The night before Team USA beat Team World 102-80 in the Nike Hoop Summit game, both suited up for the Portland Generals, a collection of basketball talent ranging from 15 to 23 years old to take on Team USA's Nike Hoop Summit roster, a collection of 12 of the country's top high school seniors.
Washington scored 19 points, hitting several 3-pointers and penetrating the Team USA defense to score on three levels comfortably.
The Portland Generals won two of the four quarters — the scoreboard reset after each — but Team USA prevailed in the final tally, 100-92.
Baylor-bound guard Keyonte George finished with a scrimmage-high 20 points, Texas pledge Dillon Mitchell added 12 points and five boards, Arkansas-bound Nick Smith Jr. had 11 points and eight assists and Oregon signee Kel'el Ware added 11 points for Team USA. All are 2022 McDonald's All-Americans.
Shelstad didn't fill up the stat sheet quite like Washington, but handled pressure from blue chip guards, got to the hoop effectively and set up the Portland General's offense for long stretches.
The 6-foot point guard is considered the top prospect in Oregon by talent evaluators and opposing coaches alike. Washington would have been the state's top senior prospect, but he transferred from Jefferson to AZ Compass Prep, a national prep school with as many as 10 Division I prospects that has competed in GEICO Nationals the last two years, along with teammate Mookie Cook, a consensus five-star 2023 forward who committed to Oregon last week.
There, the 6-foot-5 guard averaged around 11 points per game.
Washington and Shelstad were the top two Oregon prep prospects on the Moda Center floor Thursday, but they were hardly the only ones with local ties.
Four active Portland and Portland State players, as was Washington all-Pac-12 standout Terrell Brown and Washington high school standouts Hunter Carter of Annie Wright, the youngest player on the floor at 15, and West Seattle senior Isaiah Watts.
