Trevor Angove of Bandon (long jump) joins twin brother Hunter (pole vault) as a 2A track and field state champion

“I didn’t feel that great. ... Listening to the other competitors, no one felt like they were doing too good. I just had the best worst day.”

Think there isn’t a bit of a sibling rivalry going between senior twin brothers Hunter and Trevor Angove of Bandon?

Hunter kicked off the OSAA track and field championships Thursday at Hayward Field in Eugene by winning the Class 2A boys pole vault title, clearing 13 feet on his first try before going out with three attempts at a personal-best 15-7.

A couple hours later, it was Trevor’s turn to stand atop the medals podium after surprising himself with a state title in the long jump, going 20-2¼ to beat coastal rival Zak Holsey of Waldport by one inch.

Trevor’s first thought?

“My plan was to go up there right now and tell him,” he said with a smirk and a laugh.

Trevor came to the meet seeded 10th out of the 12 jumpers but got his winning jump — which was still 5¼ inches off his personal best — on his second attempt in the prelims.

Even then, “I didn’t feel that great,” he said. “I did not expect to win at all today. I think it’s the facility and the nerves, but listening to the other competitors, no one felt like they were doing too good. I just had the best worst day.”

Trevor has three more chances Friday evening to take home titles in the 400 meters (he qualified fourth from Thursday’s prelims), triple jump and high jump. Hunter has one more opportunity, running a leg on the Tigers' 4x400 relay.
