Central Catholic teammates Kyeese Hollands, Elliott Bush finish 1-2 in 6A girls javelin; Hollands can complete rare double Saturday

“We push each other all the time. If she does good, I do good as well. I love our dynamic.”

Kyeese Hollands has spent the past few weeks working on syncing her speedier footwork with all the other moving parts to her javelin throw.

It took the Central Catholic junior a few throws to make the necessary adjustments Friday at the OSAA track and field championships at Hayward Field in Eugene.

Once she did, she unleashed a throw of 146 feet, 6 inches, that proved to be the winning throw of the Class 6A girls competition.

“My marks, with my speed, I wasn’t hitting them on my first three throws,” Hollands said. “So I scooted back and went off the runway and not my marks. And I fixed the angle, too, because sometimes I tend to plow the jav.”

Hollands also fed off her teammate, senior Elliott Bush, who held the lead after the prelims and followed Hollands’ throw with a 141-3 that held up for second place.

“I absolutely love her,” Hollands said. “We push each other all the time. If she does good, I do good as well. I love our dynamic.”

Hollands now goes for a rare double Saturday, when she is the top seed in the discus. Only twice in the history of the big-school meet has a girl won the javelin and discus in the same year.
