‘I just hope Oregon is ready.’ Youthful Lake Oswego wins 6A girls track and field team championship for first time — and likely not the last

“Everyone all season long has been putting in all the work, and we deserve this. I’m so happy that we got what we’ve worked for.”

The Lake Oswego girls sent a message to the rest of Class 6A at the OSAA track and field championships at Hayward Field in Eugene.

The Lakers amassed 77 points, capping their first state championship Saturday evening with the third-fastest 1,600-meter relay in state history.

“Three out of four of us on the 4x400 are sophomores,” said sophomore Mia Brahe-Pedersen, who won four state titles at her first OSAA meet. “And two of us on the 4x100 are sophomores. So, we’ve got two more years of this.

“I just hope Oregon is ready.”

Brahe-Pedersen didn’t get the 100-meter state record she hoped for thanks to a blustery wind, but her victory in 11.09 seconds tied for the fourth-fastest time in all conditions ever by a U.S. high school girl.

She also anchored the victorious 4x100, broke the meet record she set the day before in winning the 200 and ran a 54.9-second leg on the 4x400 relay.

“I’m exhausted, but I couldn’t have had a better two days,” she said. “It’s so hard to put into an actual explanation. Words can barely describe how proud I am of these girls. Everyone all season long has been putting in all the work, and we deserve this. I’m so happy that we got what we’ve worked for.”

Sophomore Josie Donelson, who won the 400 and anchored the 4x400 to victory, added, “Ending the day with such an amazing team with a time that we’re just really proud of and on such a positive note is just great.”

Oregon City, which won the culminating-week 6A state meet last spring, took second, paced by senior Harley Daniel — the athlete of the meet who swept the hurdles titles — and junior Sophia Beckmon, who became the first 20-foot long jumper in state history Friday morning.

Jesuit, led by senior Chloe Foerster’s victories in the 800 and 1,500, finished third, while South Eugene placed fourth, edging West Linn by one point.

Lions junior Anika Sukumar nearly became the fourth girl in state history to triple jump 40 feet with a legal wind, jumping 39-11½ on her final attempt.

Clackamas senior Deshanae Norman broke the meet record in the high jump, clearing a personal-best 5-10¼ on her second attempt. St. Mary’s Academy senior Jewyl Newton capped her career by winning the shot put, and Sandy junior Sydney Brewster won the discus.
