Zach Moore entered the Class 4A/3A/2A/1A state tennis championships as the No. 1 seed in boys singles play.

He definitely lived up to that seeding at the tournament held Friday and Saturday at Oregon State University in Corvallis.

Moore, a Cascade junior, won all four of his tournament matches in straight sets, losing a total of six games in the process.

Moore capped his impressive tournament run by recording a 6-2, 6-0 win over Catlin Gabel senior Tai Leong, the No. 2 seed, in Saturday’s boys singles championship match, making him the first state champion in boys singles play for the Cougars.

Marist Catholic junior Kai Villano got a 6-2, 6-3 win over Riverdale senior Maxwell Furman in the boys singles third-place match.

While Catlin Gabel took the runner-up spot in singles play, the Eagles claimed gold in doubles competition, as the Catlin Gabel team of seniors Peter Ye and Will Silver secured the boys doubles title.

Ye and Silver, the top-seeded team, won their three matches in straight sets before having to battle to a 7-6, 5-7, 6-3 win over Marist Catholic sophomore Peyton Tyner and junior Jack Kiefer, the No. 2-seeded team, in the championship match.

In the boys doubles third-place match, the Oregon Episcopal School team of junior Ethan Tieu and sophomore Richard Li, the No. 4 seed, got a 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 win over the third-seeded team of junior Lucas Holiday and senior Ben Lee from Catlin Gabel.

Catlin Gabel, with 20 points, edged Marist Catholic for the team title. The Spartans were second with a score of 18. Oregon Episcopal School was third with a total of nine, and Cascade was fourth with 8.5 points.
