Oregon high school softball playoffs: 6A Round 1 highlights; vote for Monday's top star

The Oregon high school softball playoffs got underway Monday with 6A first-round action. Here's a look at some of the highlights.

Tigard 14, Grant 0
The top-seeded Tigers got off to a strong start to postseason play, running to a big win at Tigard High School.
Tigard broke the game open in the second inning, scoring seven runs in the frame behind RBIs from senior Kani Korok, senior Olivia Allison, senior Kaylin Kisor and sophomore Ella Dardis.
Senior left-handed pitcher Makenna Reid gave up one hit and struck out eight for Tigard in three innings.
Tigard, which improved to 25-3, will play host to South Salem in a second-round game Wednesday.
Grant finished its season 9-13.
South Salem 7, Gresham 0
Sophomore Rowan Thompson did it all for the Saxons, pitching a shutout and hitting a two-run homer at South Salem.
Thompson, a right-hander, struck out 15 batters. Senior Emma Cordero added two doubles and an RBI.
South Salem, which improved to 19-7, will play at Tigard in a second-round game Wednesday. Gresham finished its season 18-9.
Jesuit 6, Forest Grove 2
Senior Hannah Brink and sophomore Mary Cunningham each went 3 for 3 to help the Crusaders get the win at Jesuit High School.
Cunningham doubled, scored twice and drove in a run. Brink plated two runs.
Senior Ainsley Davis picked up the pitching win for Jesuit. She gave up one earned run on five hits while striking out six and walking three.
The Crusaders, who improved to 22-5, will travel to Newberg for a second-round game Wednesday.
Sophomore Jacquelin Lang and senior Hailey Yon each had a hit and an RBI for Forest Grove, which finished its season 14-10.
Newberg 4, Roseburg 2
The Tigers got a three-run walk-off homer by junior Abby Carsley in the eighth inning to get the thrilling victory at Newberg High School.
Newberg, which improved to 22-5, will play host to Jesuit in a second-round game Wednesday. Roseburg finished its season 12-15.
Sheldon 16, Roosevelt 0
Sophomore Payton Burnham provided the power for Sheldon, both at the plate and in the pitcher’s circle, leading the Irish to the victory at Sheldon High School.
Burnham hit two home runs and drove in three runs. In the circle, she gave up two hits while striking out eight and walking none in three innings.
Sophomore Ashlyn Martin went 3 for 3 with a double, three runs and two RBIs. Senior Molly Blanchette went 2 for 3 with three RBIs, and sophomore Olivia Gilhuber added a home run and three RBIs.
The Irish, which improved to 23-5, will play host to Lake Oswego in a second-round game Wednesday.
Roosevelt, which got hits from junior Lily Ferres and freshman Leslie Homan, finished its season 16-8.
North Medford 7, Canby 4
The Black Tornado jumped out to a 7-1 lead and held off a Cougars charge to get the win at Canby High School.
Sophomore Gabbi Urban had the big hit for North Medford in its six-run third inning with a two-run double. Senior Alissa Hartzheim, freshman Caileigh Raines and senior Anna Gates also drove in runs in the frame.
North Medford, which improved to 13-14, will play at McNary in a second-round game Wednesday.
Junior Ava Carroll went 4 for 4 for Canby, which finished its season 15-11.
McNary 13, Grants Pass 3
Sophomore Ali Martinez blasted a grand slam with two outs in the first inning, helping the Celtics jump out to a 7-0 lead on their way to getting a five-inning win at McNary High School.
Junior Lacey Vasas picked up the pitching win for McNary, giving up no earned runs and five hits. She went 2 for 4 at the plate with a double and an RBI. Junior Heather Ebner went 2 for 3 with a double and two RBIs.
The Celtics, who improved to 21-5, will play host to North Medford in a second-round game Wednesday.
Grants Pass finished its season 10-17.
Oregon City 10, Reynolds 0
Sophomore Lily Riley threw a no-hitter, striking out 13 of the 17 batters she faced, leading the Pioneers to a five-inning win at Oregon City High School.
The Oregon City offense was fueled by a grand slam by junior Allyson Nordling.
The Pioneers, who improved to 19-7, will play host to Three Rivers League rival Lakeridge in a second-round game Wednesday.
Reynolds finished its season 14-12.
Lakeridge 1, Central Catholic 0
The Pacers received a perfect-game pitching performance from senior Holly Beeman and a run in the top of the seventh inning to get a thrilling victory at Clackamas High School.
Beeman had 17 strikeouts and no walks, and the Pacers played perfect defense behind her.
Lakeridge got a one-out single by senior Brooklyn Davis in the seventh inning. That led to an RBI hit to right field by senior Ella Hoyle, plating freshman pinch runner Marin Lafrance with the winning run.
Senior Ella Peake had three hits, including two doubles, for the Pacers. Hoyle added two singles.
Lakeridge, which improved to 13-11, will play at Three Rivers League rival Oregon City in a second-round game Wednesday.
For Central Catholic, which finished its season 16-8, senior pitcher Ally Hyde had 14 strikeouts.
“It was a tough way to lose, but we couldn’t be more proud of our girls,” Rams coach Sara Stauffer said.
Tualatin 3, Southridge 0
Senior Camille Schmitz threw a complete-game one-hitter, striking out 13 and walking one, leading the Timberwolves to victory at Tualatin High School.
Freshman Paley Sullivan led the Tualatin offense, going 2 for 3 with a triple, a run and an RBI. Senior Rinoa Aiger had a hit, a walk and two runs.
Tualatin, which improved to 18-7, will play host to Three Rivers League rival West Linn in a second-round game Wednesday.
Junior Rachel Powers had the hit for Southridge, which finished its season 13-13.
West Linn 6, South Medford 0
West Linn got home runs from senior Ava Sin, junior Rebecca Gomez and junior Courtney Williams to power the Lions to the win at South Medford High School.
West Linn also got a strong game from senior pitcher Addison Sobotta, and solid defense behind her.
“It was a well-deserved win,” West Linn coach Gina Garvey said.
The Lions, who improved to 8-18 with their seventh win in their past eight games, will play at Three Rivers League rival Tualatin in a second-round game Wednesday.
South Medford finished its season 22-5.
McMinnville 13, Nelson 3
Junior Margo McManus went 4 for 4 with a home run, two doubles and four RBIs to help power McMinnville to a big win at McMinnville High School.
Senior Madelyn Powell added two hits, including a home run, and two RBIs for the Grizzlies. Freshman Adileen Paasch went 4 for 4 with three doubles and two RBIs. Sophomore Mackenzie Bekofsky went 3 for 4 with two doubles, three runs and an RBI in addition to striking out nine and getting the pitching win.
McMinnville, which improved to 23-4, will play host to Barlow in a second-round game Wednesday.
Junior Ailee Young scored two runs for Nelson, which finished its inaugural season 14-11.
Barlow 9, Westview 6
Sophomore Morgan Calcagno went 3 for 4 with a two-run homer to help power the Bruins to victory at Westview High School.
Sophomore Leah Emmarson added a solo home run for Barlow. Freshman Peyton Trickel and junior Taylor Groza each had a two-run double. Sophomore Britney Henderson picked up the pitching win, striking out eight.
Barlow, which improved to 13-12, will play at McMinnville in a second-round game Wednesday.
Westview finished its season 19-9.
Mountainside 7, Sprague 0
The Mavericks had it all working — pitching, hitting and defense — in their victory at Mountainside High School.
Sophomore Izzy Enright pitched a shutout, giving up six hits while striking out three and walking one. Junior Ashley Goodale helped lead the offensive attack, going 3 for 4 with a triple, two runs and an RBI. Senior Addison Kachnik went 2 for 4 with a double and an RBI. Junior Chloe Arbow went 2 for 3 with a double and an RBI.
Senior second baseman Kendall Stout shined on defense, being involved in 11 plays, including a couple of diving plays.
The Mavericks, who improved to 19-7, will play at Bend in a second-round game Wednesday.
Sprague finished its season 18-9.
Bend 14, Franklin 0
The Lava Bears, hosting a postseason game for the first time, came away with a victory in five innings.
Sophomore Addisen Fisher threw a no-hitter, getting all 15 outs on strikeouts. She walked one, coming with two outs in the first inning. Fisher also had three hits, including a double and a triple.
Senior Lena Zahniser hit a home run, the 40th of the season for the Bend team. Violet Loftus had two hits for the Lava Bears. Every player in the Bend lineup had at least one hit.
“We’ve been hitting the ball really well, and we’ve been aggressive on the bases,” Bend coach Tom Mauldin said.
Bend improved to 27-1. The Lava Bears will play host to Mountainside in a second-round game Wednesday.
Franklin finished its season 11-12.
Lake Oswego 5, Sherwood 2
Junior pitcher Paris Richards turned in an effective complete-game performance, helping the Lakers get the victory at Sherwood High School.
Richards struck out four and walked none. Junior Virginia Harmon drove in two runs for Lake Oswego. Juniors Ava Bendren and Kyla Zhang each went 2 for 3 with an RBI.
The Lakers, who improved to 12-16, will play at Sheldon in a second-round game Wednesday.
Sherwood finished its season 21-6.
