Sherwood 1, Tualatin 0

Not getting a single hit usually doesn’t result in a positive outcome.

But the Sherwood baseball team made it work.

The Bowmen, despite getting no-hit by Tualatin junior Logan Larrance, came away with a win over the Timberwolves in front of a large crowd at Sherwood High School.

“Oh my goodness, it’s amazing,” said Sherwood senior Cam Christenson, who scored the game’s only run. “With this group of guys, and being here for four years, and finally having an actual playoff after the last couple of years, it’s just an amazing experience. The culture we have on this team makes my year.”

“My teammates backed me up,” said Sherwood sophomore Nolan Umlandt, who threw a complete-game, three-hit shutout. “We got that one run early, and I knew my job today was that I had to shove and put my best out there for my team, because I knew it was going to be a low-scoring game. I had great ‘D’ behind me, and we got the job done.”

The Bowmen got the run in the bottom of the first inning. Christenson drew a leadoff walk. He stole second base, moved to third on a long fly-ball out by senior Brennan Wieg and scored on a shallow sacrifice fly by senior Chase Highberger. Tualatin sophomore shortstop Ethan Matsuoka made a nice running, over-the-shoulder catch on the play, but Christenson didn’t hesitate in taking off for the plate.

“I love those,” Christenson said. “Because every time the shortstop or second baseman is going out like that, their back is to the field, and they can’t see me. I sneak back there, take off, and hopefully use my speed to get there in time. I was going all the way.”

The Bowmen got some clutch plays to hold off the Timberwolves. Sherwood sophomore catcher Liam Kliever completed an inning-ending strikeout-throwout double play in the top of the fifth inning. In the top of the sixth, with Tualatin having runners on first and second with two outs, Umlandt got an inning-ending strikeout on a 3-2 pitch.

“We were able to hold on, play defense, and Nolan was pitching amazing,” Christenson said.

Umlandt struck out eight and walked two.

“I felt really good,” he said. “The fastball was really blowing by those hitters, up and in. My curveball was working well. It felt amazing today. My slider was working, too.”

Larrance, in throwing his no-hitter, struck out seven and walked three in six innings.

“Oh man, I was into it the entire game,” Larrance said. “I was just excited to get out there and do my thing. It was just two solid pitchers going at it. It was a great game; they just came out on top.”

Freshman Isaac Pfeifer had two hits for the Timberwolves. Larrance added one hit.
