State leaders through Week 6:

Class 6A | Class 5A | Class 4A

CLASS 6A

No. 3 Central Catholic 46, Barlow 14

Cru Newman (23 of 34) passed for 451 yards and six touchdowns as the visiting Rams of Southeast Portland defeated the Bruins (3-4, 3-2 Mt. Hood Conference) in Gresham.

Newman, a junior who has thrown for 14 touchdowns with no interceptions this season, also rushed for 73 yards. His six touchdown passes matches his career high, set in Week 5 of last season.

Newman found eight receivers with passes, including Zhaiel Smith on a 98-yard score after penalties pushed the Rams (6-1, 5-0) to their 2-yard line. Smith was streaking up a sideline when Newman hit him in stride, and Smith went the rest of the way for the score.

Smith has at least one touchdown catch in each of the past five games.

Niko May had two touchdowns, and Blake Anderson, Pomer Davison and Solomon McDaniel each caught a touchdown pass from Newman.

Solomon McDaniel anchored the Rams’ defense with three solo tackles (including a sack) and five assists. Roan Beaupre had three solo tackles and two assists, and Zach Davis had a sack.

No. 10 Nelson 54, David Douglas 28

Jaidon Siler ran for five touchdowns and Boone Standley had three sacks to highlight the win by the Hawks of Happy Valley over the visiting Scots (0-7, 0-5 Mt. Hood Conference) of Southeast Portland.

Siler’s five rushing touchdowns set a single-game school record for the Hawks (5-1, 4-1), who are in their second season of varsity competition and who totaled one touchdown on the ground in their inaugural season.

Clackamas 42, Gresham 7

Hudson Norman passed for three touchdowns — two to AJ Perez and one to Parker Harrison — and Kayle Pisano and Tyler King registered sacks as the Cavaliers defeated the Gophers (1-5, 0-5 Mt. Hood Conference) in Gresham.

The Gophers’ touchdown came on a 51-yard pass from Jaxon Doving to Andre Miller, making the score 28-7 late in the third quarter.

Norman is the fourth quarterback to see meaningful time for the Cavaliers (3-4, 2-3) this season. He started the season as a wide receiver and cornerback after being the junior varsity quarterback last season. Injuries to Blake Baker and Mateo Maehara have forced the Cavaliers to dip deep into the depth chart behind center, and that need wasn’t limited to quarterback Thursday.

“It’s been a crazy year where a lot of guys have had to step up into roles they weren’t expected to be in,” coach James Holan said in a text. “We started five guys who should be starting on JV, and I’m just super proud of how they are growing as players and people. Proud our guys keep fighting.”

Sandy 14, Reynolds 7

The Pioneers (4-3, 4-1) exploited a fumble recovery for the go-ahead touchdown early in the fourth quarter and then held off the Raiders in a Mt. Hood Conference game at Sandy.

With the score 7-7, the Pioneers forced and recovered a fumble by the Raiders (4-3, 2-3) of Troutdale. On the fourth play of the ensuing drive, Cole Rotzien ran for the decisive score.

The Raiders scored their touchdown after a blocked field goal try.

Garrett Willenberg rushed for 200 yards and the Pioneers’ first touchdown, his eighth rushing touchdown in the past four games.

Sherwood 42, Newberg 0

Fumble recoveries on successive kickoff returns helped the Bowmen take a 28-0 lead before the Tigers’ third possession in the Pacific Conference game at Newberg.

Treyson Edleman and Carson Mullins each forced and recovered a fumble on the kickoff returns for the Bowmen (5-2, 3-0). After the Bowmen’s third touchdown, the Tigers (4-3, 1-2) drove 79 yards but were stopped on fourth-and-goal from the 3.

The Bowmen made two other fourth-down stops in the third quarter.

Nick Gribble rushed for two touchdowns and Kasen Covert passed for two touchdowns for the Bowmen.

McMinnville 49, Glencoe 34

The Grizzlies (4-3, 2-1 Pacific Conference) rallied from a 21-7 second-quarter deficit and defeated the Crimson Tide in McMinnville.

The Grizzlies’ Austin Rapp exploited his offensive line to pick up 311 yards and four touchdowns — one a 90-yard run — on 17 carries. Kane Sullivan passed for two Grizzlies touchdowns.

The Crimson Tide (2-5, 1-2) of Hillsboro built their lead on a touchdown pass from Trevor O’Leary to Conor Lemay, a touchdown run by Lucas Anthony and a short run after a pass from O’Leary to Cayden Mack

Tyler Mishler had a touchdown catch and returned one of his two interceptions for a score for the Grizzlies, who got 11 tackles and an interception from Austin Weeks.

Sprague 26, North Salem 19

The Olympians made a defensive stop with about three minutes left and then stitched together a few first downs to run out the clock in the victory over the visiting Vikings (4-3, 2-3 Central/Southwest Valley Conference) in Salem.

Drew Rodriguez returned an interception for a touchdown — pulling into a tie for the most nonoffensive touchdowns in Class 6A this season with his third — and Athan Palmateer passed to Preston Simmons for a touchdown.

Barik Hill and Casen Collins ran for touchdowns for the Olympians (4-3, 3-2).

Jerrik Wangler rushed for 80 yards and had two touchdowns for the Vikings, who led 13-7 at halftime.

Roosevelt 43, McDaniel 0

Ben Weiner passed for three touchdowns and scored one on a quarterback sneak, Dontrell Betts rushed for more than 200 yards, and MyQuis Fesser made two interceptions to lead the Roughriders past the Mountain Lions at Roosevelt High School in North Portland.

The Roughriders (4-3, 4-1 Portland Interscholastic League) got two touchdown catches from Dexter Foster in building a 29-0 halftime lead. In addition to his rushing yards, Betts scored a touchdown on the ground.

Nywaun Campbell made three sacks and Aisea Takau had two for the Roughriders’ defense, which held the Mountain Lions (0-7, 0-5) of Northeast Portland to 57 yards of total offense.

Jefferson 42, Franklin 6

The Democrats got five touchdowns on plays of more than 50 yards in defeating the visiting Lightning in North Portland.

Josiah Heintzman rushed for a touchdown for the Lightning (4-2, 3-2 Portland Interscholastic League) of Southeast Portland.

Sanborne Melson’s 99-yard interception return was the longest of the Democrats’ big-play touchdowns. The senior defensive back evaded some would-be tacklers on his return, stiff-armed another away and then was off to the end zone.

Jeray Mott scored on a 75-yard pass play and a 70-yard run for the Democrats. D’Marieon Gates scored on a 50-yard run and made an impact with a sack and numerous tackles on defense, and J’Sean McIver scored on a 65-yard run and had a sack.

Pedo Gonzales had two sacks and three tackles for loss for the Democrats, and Lamar Stewart had two sacks.

Brave Johnson was 10 of 11 for 210 yards and touchdowns to Montral Brazile Jr. and Mott.

The Democrats (4-3, 4-1) won their third game in a row. They scored 27 points in their first four games and now have scored at least 26 points in each of their past three games.

Grant 44, Cleveland 0

Kellen Segel passed for two touchdowns and Marcus Rouse Jr. had a 54-yard touchdown run as the host Generals defeated the Warriors (2-5, 1-4 Portland Interscholastic League) of Southeast Portland at the Marshall campus in Southeast Portland.

Milan Clark and Marshune Waters caught Segel’s touchdown passes. Camari Owens and Jayden Moses also ran for scores as the Generals (5-2, 5-0) of Northeast Portland built a 37-0 halftime lead.

The Generals posted their third shutout in their past four games and limited the Warriors to minus-4 yards of total offense.

Wells 38, Lincoln 8

Parker Feld-Gore ran for three touchdowns, Wyatt Andler rushed for two, and Emmett Davis made an interception to lead the Guardians (3-4, 2-3 Portland Interscholastic League) to the victory over the visiting Cardinals (1-6, 1-4) in a matchup of Southwest Portland schools at Ida B. Wells-Barnett High School.

CLASS 5A
