The ensuing Black Tornado drive reached the Irish 1-yard line, but the Eugene team made a fourth-and-goal stop to thwart the drive. The Irish closed with 28 more unanswered points.

Sam Leavitt passed for six touchdowns — four to Mark Hamper — and ran for a score to drive the Lions to the win over the visiting Tigers (6-1, 2-1) and sole possession of first place in the Three Rivers League.

The Lions (6-1, 3-0) forged a 28-0 first-quarter lead, starting with a 71-yard touchdown connection between Leavitt and Gus Donnerberg. Leavitt’s touchdown run and scoring passes to Hamper and Wiley Donnerberg made it a 28-point lead with more than three minutes left in the first quarter.

Konner Grant scored on a one-yard run and, after an interception by Austin Goetz, Grant passed to Jake Feist for a five-yard touchdown that made the score 28-14.

Among Hamper’s touchdowns were plays of 65 and 43 yards. His four touchdown catches are a career high (he’s had two games with three) and ran his season total to 13. He has caught at least one touchdown pass in his past nine games dating to last season.

Leavitt also logged a career high with his six touchdown passes, which gave him a season total of 21.

No. 3 Central Catholic 46, Barlow 14

Cru Newman (23 of 34) passed for 451 yards and six touchdowns as the visiting Rams of Southeast Portland defeated the Bruins (3-4, 3-2 Mt. Hood Conference) in Gresham.

Newman found eight receivers with passes, including Zhaiel Smith on a 98-yard score after penalties pushed the Rams (6-1, 5-0) to their 2-yard line. Smith was streaking up a sideline when Newman hit him in stride, and Smith went the rest of the way for the score.

Smith has at least one touchdown catch in each of the past five games.

Niko May had two touchdowns, and Blake Anderson, Pomer Davison and Solomon McDaniel each caught a touchdown pass from Newman.

Solomon McDaniel anchored the Rams’ defense with three solo tackles (including a sack) and five assists. Roan Beaupre had three solo tackles and two assists, and Zach Davis had a sack.

Calvin Macy scored on a swing pass from Liam Davis with 41.9 seconds left, and the host Lakers (5-2, 2-1 Three Rivers League) downed the Timberwolves in a game featuring four lead changes in the final quarter.

The Timberwolves (5-2, 1-2) had taken a 31-28 lead with less than three minutes to play on a nine-yard run by quarterback Jack Wagner. The Lakers, when they regained possession, converted a fourth-down play and got four catches from Matt Layne on the way to the decisive touchdown.

Layne caught a touchdown pass from Davis to push the Lakers ahead 28-24 with 7:20 left, about three minutes after the Timberwolves converted a Lakers turnover into a touchdown — AJ Noland running from 15 yards — and a 24-21 lead.

Two touchdown passes from Davis to Owen West helped the Lakers take a 14-13 lead to halftime after the Timberwolves went ahead 13-0 on a touchdown pass from Wagner to Noland and a two-yard run by Luke Ash.

The Timberwolves amassed 268 yards rushing, and Wagner (one touchdown pass, one interception) threw for 229 yards. Jayden Fortier made eight catches for 89 yards.

Jonathan Berrien made three sacks, Jared Lang ran for two touchdowns, and Alex Ingalls passed for two scores, pacing the Mavericks to the win over the host Beavers (1-6, 1-2 Metro League) in a matchup of Beaverton teams.

The Mavericks (7-0, 3-0) took a 35-0 lead with 4½ minutes left in the third quarter on Ingalls’ second touchdown pass, a three-yard throw to Samuel Pimentel.

Hunter Borter connected with Max Spear for the Beavers’ first touchdown — a 70-yard play — and passed to Oliver Leubkert with 1:18 left in the fourth quarter for the team’s second score.

Grants Pass 27, No. 8 South Medford 26

The Cavemen jumped to a 27-0 lead and then withstood the Panthers’ rally, stopping a two-point conversion run midway through the fourth quarter in the win at Mel Ingram Field in Grants Pass.

Dylan Espinosa’s second touchdown, a four-yard run, brought the Panthers (5-2, 3-2 Central/Southwest Valley Conference) within one point with 5:54 left. The Cavemen (5-2, 3-2) made the stop to keep the lead.

“They had us on the ropes and loaded up one side and countered the other way,” Cavemen coach Brad Page said in an email. “We had three, four guys stuff it. It was a huge, pivotal play of the game.”

The Cavemen built their lead on three touchdown passes from Jace Blanchard (two to Jackson Tunick, the other to Aiden Dietz) and a nine-yard touchdown run by Gage Blay.

Deacon Edgar passed to Andrew Walker for the Panthers’ first touchdown, drawing South Medford within 27-7 at halftime. Touchdown runs in the third quarter by Espinosa and Edgar pulled the Panthers within one possession, 27-20, after three quarters.

After making the score 27-26, the Panthers regained possession at the Cavemen 41 with 3:32 left. On the second play of the series, they lost a fumble, and the Cavemen achieved a first down and ran out the clock.

Oregon City 29, Lakeridge 28

The Pioneers rallied from 14 points down in the fourth quarter, taking the lead with 1:24 left on Ben Schneider’s touchdown pass to Thomas Borden followed by a two-point conversion on a trick play, to defeat the Pacers (2-5, 0-3 Three Rivers League) at Pioneer Memorial Stadium in Oregon City.

Ansu Sanoe’s second touchdown run pushed the Pacers of Lake Oswego to a 28-14 lead with 10:28 remaining. The Pioneers quickly cut it to 28-21 on a 60-yard connection between Schneider and Jake Lopez with 9:24 to play.

The Pioneers’ decisive possession started with about three minutes left. Borden’s touchdown catch brought them within one point at 28-27. According to the Miles Vance Sports Journal, the Pioneers used a double-reverse pass from Logan Fry to Schneider on the two-point conversion and took a 29-28 lead.

The Pacers’ final possession got into Pioneers territory, but on the final play, the Pioneers (4-3, 1-2) intercepted a pass at the goal line.

The Pioneers logged their first Three Rivers victory since 2018, ending a 19-game league losing streak.

Liberty 26, Century 13

Vincent Cabezudo ran for two touchdowns and Houstyn Lee-Perry and Reid Linkmeyer ran for one apiece in the Falcons’ win over the host Jaguars (2-5, 0-3 Pacific Conference) in a matchup of Hillsboro School District teams.

The Falcons (4-3, 2-1) led 21-0 after three quarters.

Elijah Garcia had 154 all-purpose yards and scored a touchdown for the Jaguars, who got a 56-yard touchdown catch from Anthony Martinez but didn’t take maximum advantage of drives that pierced the Falcons’ 20-yard line.

Fumble recoveries on successive kickoff returns helped the Bowmen take a 28-0 lead before the Tigers’ third possession in the Pacific Conference game at Newberg.

Treyson Edleman and Carson Mullins each forced and recovered a fumble on the kickoff returns for the Bowmen (5-2, 3-0). After the Bowmen’s third touchdown, the Tigers (4-3, 1-2) drove 79 yards but were stopped on fourth-and-goal from the 3.

The Bowmen made two other fourth-down stops in the third quarter.

Nick Gribble rushed for the Bowmen’s first two scores and Kasen Covert passed for two touchdowns.

Clackamas 42, Gresham 7

Hudson Norman passed for three touchdowns — two to AJ Perez and one to Parker Harrison — and Kayle Pisano and Tyler King registered sacks as the Cavaliers defeated the Gophers (1-5, 0-5 Mt. Hood Conference) in Gresham.

The Gophers’ touchdown came on a 51-yard pass from Jaxon Doving to Andre Miller, making the score 28-7 late in the third quarter.

Norman is the fourth quarterback to see meaningful time for the Cavaliers (3-4, 2-3) this season. He started the season as a wide receiver and cornerback after being the junior varsity quarterback last season. Injuries to Blake Baker and Mateo Maehara have forced the Cavaliers to dip deep into the depth chart behind center, and that need wasn’t limited to quarterback Thursday.

“It’s been a crazy year where a lot of guys have had to step up into roles they weren’t expected to be in,” coach James Holan said in a text. “We started five guys who should be starting on JV, and I’m just super proud of how they are growing as players and people. Proud our guys keep fighting.”

Jeray Mott scored on a 75-yard pass play and a 70-yard run for the Democrats. D’Marieon Gates scored on a 50-yard run and made an impact with a sack and numerous tackles on defense, and J’Sean McIver scored on a 65-yard run and had a sack.

No. 4 Thurston 1, South Eugene 0 (forfeit)

South Eugene forfeited its Midwestern League football game Friday night with Thurston because of attrition in the program, which returned to the field this season after a two-year hiatus.

South Eugene coach Chad Kessler called it the hardest decision he's had to make all season. He looked at the future health of the program when making the decision.

“When you’re building a program, you don’t want to turn kids away from the sport,” Kessler said. “When you have a few too many injuries, it’s reached that saturation point where it becomes a safety issue. It’s an anguishing moment, but it’s the right thing to do.”

Kessler said the injuries had left him fielding what would have been the equivalent of a freshman team against a Colts team ranked No. 4 in the SBLive Oregon 5A media poll.

He added that he hopes to get some players back from injuries next week in time for the Axe’s game against Eagle Point.

Six years ago, the Axe faced a comparable situation when they qualified for the 6A playoffs, resulting in a forfeit to No. 1 seed Jesuit. The program canceled its COVID spring 2021 and fall 2021 seasons because of low turnout before Kessler endeavored to resurrect it this fall

No. 5 Silverton 45, McKay 28

Cohen Mulick had a touchdown catch and returned a kickoff for a score, Sawyer Teeney passed for three touchdowns, and the Foxes — who trailed 14-7 in the second quarter — came back to defeat the host Royal Scots (1-6, 1-5 Mid-Willamette Conference) in Salem.

Jamahl Wilson ran for more than 200 yards and three touchdowns for the Royal Scots. His second score gave McKay a 14-7 lead midway through the second quarter.

The Foxes answered with 21 points in succession on Teeney’s touchdown passes — to Elijah Howard, Steeley Mucken and Jackson Pfeifer — and took a 28-21 lead.

Wilson’s third touchdown brought the Royal Scots within 28-20. Silverton created more distance with Mulick’s kickoff return and a nine-yard touchdown run by Alex Briseno for a 42-20 lead midway through the fourth quarter.

Wilson has gained nearly 800 yards and rushed for 10 touchdowns in his past three games. Kyrin Fuimaono passed for more than 200 yards, including a 62-yard scoring connection with Justice Anthony.

South Albany 29, No. 6 Dallas 26

Logan Johnson’s second rushing touchdown put the RedHawks ahead for good with about eight minutes left, and South Albany then held on defense and drained the final five-plus minutes from the clock to ice the Mid-Willamette Conference win over the Dragons in Dallas.

Tyler Konold and Ethan Ensrud ran for touchdowns and Liam Steele and Treyson Wakefield made interceptions to help the host Cougars (5-2, 2-1 Northwest Oregon Conference) secure the win over the Eagles (2-5, 2-2).

Konold missed the previous three games (and most of a fourth) with a high ankle sprain. Coach Jimmy Joyce said Konold aggravated the injury but looked good while he played.

The Eagles pulled within one point with about seven minutes left on a 50-yard touchdown catch by Markeith Harris. Their two-point conversion attempt failed, however, and a final drive for a go-ahead score ended with a Canby interception.
