Central Catholic hangs 79 points on David Douglas, just misses school, state records

No. 3 Central Catholic took aim at the record books in Thursday night’s regular-season finale at David Douglas.
In the end, the Rams came up short of the school record for points in a game and the state record for points in a half, but that took nothing away from the dazzling offensive display they put on.
Timmy Mitchell scored the first two of the Rams’ 11 touchdowns in his return from a high ankle sprain, and they put a bow on their third consecutive undefeated Mt. Hood Conference campaign with a 79-0 victory over the Scots.
“It was good to come back and get a fresh start and have a nice win,” Mitchell said.
Mitchell suffered his injury on the second play from scrimmage in Central Catholic’s Week 2 loss to then-national No. 1 St. John Bosco. While he could have returned a week ago, Rams coach Steve Pyne wanted to make sure he was 100% before having him take the field, keeping one eye on their upcoming playoff run.
“He’s a difference-maker on the field, so it’s just about getting him in shape and seeing what we can do with him,” Pyne said.
The 11 touchdowns the Rams (8-1, 7-0 MHC) scored were the most by a Class 6A team since Oregon City had 11 in a 2017 playoff game.
They matched the state record for touchdowns in a half with their nine first-half scores, narrowly missing the 20-year-old state record for points in a half set by Dayton when the Pirates scored 69 in a 91-25 win in 2002 — the state record for points in a game.
The running clock in the second half probably cost the Rams a shot at the school record of 83 points they scored in a 2013 game against Tigard.
Their 79 points tied for the fourth-most by a 6A team in state history and are the most scored in a 6A game since Lakeridge defeated Westview 79-67 in 2014.
Senior Ryan Anthony scored the first two touchdowns of his career in the second quarter, and junior Richelor Pierznik and freshman Tyson Davis scored their first career touchdowns in the second half.
