Oregon high school boys soccer playoffs: Highlights from Day 1; vote for Saturday’s top star

The Oregon high school boys soccer playoffs opened this weekend with first-round action in 6A and 3A/2A/1A. Here are some of the highlights and top performers from the first day of matches.

CLASS 6A

Jesuit 3, West Salem 0

Drew Pedersen converted a first-half penalty kick after Dominic Hoar-Weiler was tripped in the box, and Hoar-Weiler later scored off a cross from Pablo Salazar in top-seeded Jesuit’s home victory against West Salem (5-9-1).

Richard Anderson capped the scoring by heading home a free kick by Andrew Bromert, and Elliot Parelius and Fox Mason combined for the shutout in net for the Crusaders (10-1-4), who next face Wells, a 2-1 shootout winner over South Salem, on Tuesday.

Grants Pass 4, Forest Grove 0

Kenley Sheard scored two goals, and Elijah Leach had a goal and an assist to lift No. 8 Grants Pass (11-3) to a first-round home win over Forest Grove (5-7-3).

Antonio Barrero de la Puerta opened the scoring 50 seconds into the match with a rocket from the top of the penalty area. Sheard latched onto a through ball from center back Cade Brandes 24 minutes later to put the Cavemen up 2-0 at halftime.

Cameron Hick made nine saves for his sixth shutout of the season.

Gresham 2, McMinnville 0

Edison Vasquez-Dominguez scored off a free kick with four minutes remaining to break the stalemate, and Saul Martinez Colin converted a penalty with 16 seconds left to seal the Gophers’ first-round home win.

Alan Sierra needed only one save for his fourth shutout for 12th-seeded Gresham (10-2-2), making its first playoff appearance since 2018.

South Eugene 4, David Douglas 0

Charlie Lacey had a goal and an assist in the game’s first 12 minutes, and Tate Glock made two saves as the Axe (12-3-1) recorded their 12th shutout of the season Friday night.

Lacey got the No. 4-seeded Axe off to a hot start in the sixth minute, pouncing on a rebound off a shot by Boden Henley. Six minutes later, he fed Zac Walker for a goal. Bode Bascom and Nik O’Hern scored in the final 12 minutes to clinch the victory.

Troy Hockett made nine saves for the Scots (8-6-1)

Lincoln 5, Liberty 1

Gunder Miller scored on a penalty kick and added two assists, and the third-seeded Cardinals (12-2-2) had five different goal scorers in their first-round playoff win in Southwest Portland.

Kenny Bae scored unassisted in the second minute as Lincoln built a 4-1 halftime lead. Ollie McClaren, Ian Kenyon and Matthias Clift also scored for the Cardinals.

Aloha 1, North Medford 0

Attacking midfielder Christian Silva scored on a first-half tap-in off a pass from Yahir Ocampo, and Joshua Mesa made four saves to keep North Medford at bay as 11th seed Aloha (10-2-3) advanced with its first playoff win since 2018.

“The match was hard-fought, with both defenses proving resilient,” said Warriors coach Enrique Abad, whose team recorded its fifth shutout of the season.

Glencoe 5, Sandy 1

Hector Venegas Rocha had a goal and two assists, and he drew a 65th-minute penalty converted by Christian Martinez Trejo as the 15th-seeded Crimson Tide (6-4-5) won their first-round home match.

Venegas Rocha put Glencoe on the board in the 30th minute off a pass from Danny Hernandez. Four minutes later, Venegas Rocha fed Miguel Lopez for a 2-0 lead, but Sandy drew one back just before halftime on a great individual effort by John Balanos Lopez.

Diego Alvarado Roldan scored in the 64th minute to restore Glencoe’s two-goal advantage. Bryan Frausto Naranjo capped the scoring in the 75th minute.

“Sandy came out playing really well and put us under pressure,” said Crimson Tide coach Tom Stephens, whose team plays No. 2 Lakeridge on Tuesday. “We finally got a couple good bounces to get up at half, and the team played a great second half to give us opportunities to score.” 

Sherwood 4, Cleveland 3 (OT) 

Bowmen senior Aidan Brouddus stole the ball deep in Cleveland territory, split two defenders and fired home his second goal of the game late in the second overtime period to lift the No. 14 seed to its first playoff win since 2011.

Sherwood (8-3-4) played the final 30 minutes of regulation and both overtimes down a man after a player received a second caution. 

The Bowman took a 3-2 lead with 10 minutes left, only for Cleveland (6-5-4) to force extra time with a goal with three minutes remaining.

Other first-round winners Saturday were Central Catholic (1-0 over Beaverton), McNary (3-2 over Clackamas), Mountainside (3-2 in a shootout over Century), Willamette (5-0 over Tualatin), Westview (2-1 over 2021 finalist West Linn), Grant (3-2 over Lake Oswego) and Lakeridge (4-1 over Franklin).

CLASS 3A/2A/1A

Dayton 3, Santiam Christian 0

Dayton (9-5-3), a 2021 finalist, advanced out of the first round of the expanded playoffs this fall, with freshman Alex Hickman assisting on the Pirates’ first goal and scoring their last.

Junior captain Johnny Islas also scored on an assist by Oswaldo Rosas for Dayton, which travels to No. 4 seed Westside Christian on Tuesday.

Central Linn 3, North Valley 0 (OT)

Santiago Figueroa assisted on Bren Schneiter’s 85th-minute goal that broke a scoreless deadlock, then scored two insurance goals in the second overtime period as Central Linn (10-3) escaped with the first-round win at Sweet Home High School.

Schneiter assisted on both of Figueroa’s goals, slotting through balls through a North Valley defense stretched thin as the Knights pressed for an equalizer. Freshman Colton Northern recorded his second shutout for the Cobras.

Clay Brazier made 12 saves for North Valley (6-7-1).

Other first-round winners Saturday were Valley Catholic (2-1 over Pleasant Hill) and Sisters (3-2 over Blanchet Catholic).
