Austin Stampflee runs it back, repeats as 6A long jump champion — and sets Glencoe record

“There was definitely a lot more pressure, but I knew what I had to do to get back here. It was fun.”

EUGENE — As Austin Stampflee prepared to defend his Class 6A long jump title at Hayward Field, the Glencoe senior perused the results from the various district meets around the state.

One mark caught his eye immediately: Sheldon junior Owen Phillips’ 23 feet, 3½ inches, at the Southwest championships.

“I saw that 23-3, and I was like, ‘He wants it,’” Stampflee said. “So, I had to come out and just do what I do.”

And what Stampflee does is win. He took the lead from his opening jump, then went a personal-best 22-11¾ in the fifth round to secure his second consecutive OSAA state championships gold medal.

“I was shooting for 23, but my first goal was to get the school record, and I got it,” Stampflee said.

A year ago, Stampflee became the first Glencoe boy to win a title since 2010 and the first to win a long jump title. With that championship came added pressure to repeat in his final competition — Stampflee plans to become an electrician after graduation.

“My coach was like, ‘You’re going to have to run it back and do it again,’” Stampflee said. “There was definitely a lot more pressure, but I knew what I had to do to get back here. It was fun.”
