The Oregon high school football season is scheduled to begin Thursday, Aug. 31 — 80 days from today. As we count down the days until kickoff, SBLive Oregon will give you one significant number per day.

Net scoring margin for Barlow in 2019.

The Bruins reached the OSAA Class 6A semifinals that season, advancing to the final four of the playoff field for the first time since 1991. Dating to the 2014 playoffs, Barlow’s 80-point net scoring margin is the smallest of any team to make the 6A semifinals.

(For the purposes of this exercise, only the 2022 OSAA 6A championship bracket — not the Columbia Cup field — was considered. And, to be clear, the net margin encompasses to each semifinalist’s full season, not the margin through the semifinals.)

Barlow had its share of one-sided wins in 2019 — one by 56 points, another by 36 — and found a way to win more than its share of close games. From the final game of the regular season through the quarterfinals, the Bruins were 4-0 with a total margin of victory of 13 points.

The Bruins’ net margin also took a hit in their three losses, which came against stiff competition. In Week 2, Barlow lost to Tigard, which ended the regular season as the unanimous No. 1 in the statewide media poll. The Bruins’ other losses, in Week 8 and in the semifinals, were to eventual state champion Central Catholic.
