SBLive Oregon’s top athletes of 2022-23: Meet the girls soccer stars

Looking back at some of the best high school athletes of the 2022-23 school year

The high school sports season has wrapped up in Oregon, so SBLive Oregon is looking back at some of the best high school athletes of 2022-23.

Over the next week, we'll be highlighting some of the top players in all classifications in volleyball, soccer, football, basketball, softball and baseball.

Here is the SBLive Oregon all-state girls soccer team. 

First team

F Rhyli Grim, Gladstone, senior

The Tri-Valley Conference player of the year and 4A first-team all-state selection put together one of the most prolific scoring campaigns in state history, scoring 48 goals (fourth in state history) to lead the Gladiators to the semifinals for the second consecutive season. She finished her career with 106 goals. 

F Maddie Gardner, Summit, senior

Gardner led the Storm to a 5A-leading 3.9 goals per game, scoring 27 goals for the Intermountain Conference champion as Summit reached the state semifinals for the first time since winning the 2017 title.

F Maya Loudd, Tualatin, senior

The 6A co-player of the year and University of Washington signee led the Timberwolves to their first state semifinals appearance since 2015, finishing with 13 goals and six assists. Loudd finished her season by playing in the High School All-American Game.

F Abby Smith, Crescent Valley, senior

Before heading to the University of Montana, Smith capped her career by earning first-team all-state honors and leading the Raiders to a third appearance in the 5A final in the past four full seasons.

M Abby Cox, Jesuit, junior

The Crusaders went 19-0 and won their 15th OSAA 6A state championship with Cox leading the way, scoring a team-high 15 goals and earning first-team all-state honors. She committed to TCU over the winter.

M Ellie Felt, Sunset, junior

Felt is a two-time United Soccer Coaches Youth All-America selection who won 6A co-player of the year honors last fall, helping the Apollos reach the 6A state quarterfinals. She committed to Oregon State.

M Sela Freeman, Marist Catholic, senior

The Sky Em League and 4A player of the year capped a magical season (32 goals, 18 assists) by scoring twice in the OSAA state championship game, lifting the Spartans to a 4-0 victory and their first title. Freeman signed with the University of Colorado Colorado Springs.

M Emilia Warta, La Salle Prep, senior

Falcons coach Andrew Frazier predicted big things for Warta after she helped them reach the 2021 OSAA 5A state final, and Warta delivered with 29 goals and 13 assists as a senior, earning 5A player of the year honors and signing with Gonzaga University.

D Josie DeLine, Barlow, senior

DeLine anchored a Bruins back line that posted nine clean sheets en route to a Mt. Hood Conference title and second-round 6A state playoff appearance. The first-team all-state selection signed with Weber State. 

D Eva Grunkemeier, Jesuit, senior

Grunkemeier called it a career after the 6A first-team all-state selection played in the High School All-America Game, but before then, she anchored a defense that allowed just four goals (none in the playoffs) and posted 15 shutouts en route to the state title and a No. 7 ranking in the final United Soccer Coaches fall rankings.

D Paige Meador, Marist Catholic, senior

The Spartans not only scored the second-most goals in Class 4A last fall, but with Meador anchoring the back line, they also allowed just five goals (none in the playoffs) and posted 15 shutouts en route to the program’s first state title. Meador chipped in six goals and 12 assists in making the all-state first team.

D Grace Mueller, Catlin Gabel, senior

The two-time 3A/2A/1A first-team all-state selection led a defense that allowed just 11 goals and posted 11 shutouts in leading the Eagles to a seventh consecutive state final.

GK Michaela McCollum, Grant, senior

The Gonzaga signee was a first-team 6A all-state selection, recording five clean sheets with an 0.75 goals against average, allowing just five goals during the run of play and making 68 saves (.883 save percentage). She missed 2½ games with a torn knee ligament but returned for the playoffs, leading the Generals to the second round.

Player of the year

Maya Loudd, Tualatin, senior

Coach of the year

Madison Gellos, West Linn

Gellos won 6A state titles with Tualatin in 2011 and 2013 before playing at Boise State. She took over the Lions before the 2021 season, and after going 7-5-3 in her first year, she guided a team breaking in 14 newcomers to the program’s first 6A state final, recording 12 shutouts and finishing 14-1-3.
