The Oregon high school football season is scheduled to begin Thursday, Aug. 31 — 33 days from today. As we count down the days until kickoff, SBLive Oregon will give you one significant number per day.

33

Of any number in Week 6 of the spring 2021 season — the pandemic-delayed campaign whose final week included matchups pitting some Class 6A undefeateds against each other — 33 is handed up as the most significant figure.

33: Points West Linn scored against Newberg in a game both teams entered with 5-0 records. West Linn won 33-7, registering the most points Newberg allowed that season and — in the view of some — staking claim to the mythical state championship.

33: In another matchup of 5-0 teams, Central Catholic kicked a 33-yard field goal with seven seconds left to force overtime against Sunset, which secured a 38-31 win with an improbable fourth-down conversion and a defensive stop.

As for any claims by West Linn or Sunset of being Oregon’s top Class 6A team, Mountain View of Bend and West Salem also were 6-0 and would have liked to have had a say in determining a champion.
