MECHANICSBURG, Pennsylvania - Ronald Burnette scored all three touchdowns and Steelton-Highspire never trailed in a 22-8 win over Union Area to capture the PIAA 1A state title on Thursday afternoon.
Burnette scored his first touchdown on a 3-yard run with 7:53 left in the second quarter to break what had been a scoreless tie. The game's opening score was set up by a 40-yard pass earlier in the drive from Alex Erby to Jaieon Perry, one of seven times the duo hooked up in the game.
After Braylon Thomas scored from one yard out with 2:21 left in the third quarter to pull the Scotties within 7-6, Burnette answered just over a minute later with a 1-yard touchdown run of his own to make it 13-6 going to halftime.
Burnette then made it 20-6 with a 19-yard touchdown run just midway through the fourth quarter and the Steelton-Highspire defense added a safety with just over four minutes to play.
Burnette finished the day with 122 yards rushing and three scores on 28 carries, while Erby threw for 133 yards on 8-of-14 passing. Perry led all receivers with 120 yards.
Steelton-Highspire finished the season 14-1 and claimed their fourth state championship in school history, the second in the last three seasons.
