Kevin McGonigle of Bonner-Predergast selected with 37th pick of 2023 MLB Draft

The Detroit Tigers made the Pennsylvania Gatorade Player of the Year the No. 37 overall selection in the 2023 MLB Draft

With the 37th pick in the 2023 Major League Baseball Draft on Sunday evening, Bonner-Predergast shortstop Kevin McGonigle heard his name called by the Detroit Tigers. 

This past season, the 5-foot-10, 190-pounder hit .530 with eight doubles, four triples and eight homers while driving in 22 runs in 25 games. He also walked 32 times to just a pair of strikeouts while being named the Gatorade Player of the Year in the state of Pennsylvania.

In 73 games over his three high school seasons, he hit .498 with 24 homers, 18 doubles and eight triples with 77 RBIs. He walks 75 times and struck out just nine times in 290 plate appearances.

Defensively, he made four errors in 89 total chances for a fielding percentage of .955. That comes after making just three errors in 86 chances in his junior year for a fielding percentage of .965. That gives him a fielding percentage of .960 with just seven errors in 175 chances over the last two seasons.

McGonigle is currently committed to play baseball at Auburn and was a member of the Team USA 18U national team that won a gold medal at the 2022 World Baseball Championships.

The pick fell just outside of the first round as it was in Competitive Balance Round A.
