Devin Bragg, Los Alamitos freshman and potential football prospect, runs 10.35 100 to win Division I Southern Section championship

This is Devin Bragg's first season running track and field

Los Alamitos High School (California) freshman Devin Bragg has always been fast.

His family knew that watching him play football over the years.

But after being home-schooled, he entered Los Alamitos as a freshman determined to give track and field a try.

On February 26, he ran his first race - a 11.60 100-meter dash at the Long Beach Poly Trackrabbit Invitational.

It was a solid showing for a freshman, but hardly foreshadowing what was to come.

On Saturday at Moorpark High School, Bragg ran a 10.35 100-meter time to win the Division I Southern Section championship.

“Going into the race, I wasn’t feeling too good," he said. "So, I was thinking at least second or third. Then, it just happened. I didn’t expect to win or anything. But it happened.”

Bragg shaved more than a second off his season-opening time

“What changed was I just got used to being in the blocks and I got my form right," he said. "I was more relaxed and confident running. I saw the time and I was just super excited. I didn’t expect to run that this year.”

Bragg, a still-growing 6-foot-1, 160-pound defensive back in football who is the son of former Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Michael Bragg and college basketball player Octavia Curtis, may have changed his life with that 10-plus-second performance.

It's the type of showing that immediately grabs the attention of college coaches, likely for both track and field and football.

“I’m starting to realize that," he said. "It’s hard to believe. It’s crazy.”

Bragg's stepfather, Bruce Bible, the assistant head coach for the Los Alamitos football program, is familiar with the recruitments of Los Alamitos stars Malachi NelsonMakai Lemon and DeAndre Moore Jr.

But this performance - and the potential ramifications - feel more personal.

“This is all brand new,” he said. “It’s different when it’s in your house.”

Public school, a first track season and a Division I Southern Section championship.

There's a lot of exciting "new" things going on for Bragg, a freshman who has put himself on the map overnight.
