Carlos Hernandez, Monrovia 3-star wide receiver, commits to Washington State, plans early enrollment

Monrovia High School (California) wide receiver Carlos Hernandez took his first trip to Washington State University in April, so he figured he knew what to expect on his official visit.

The 6-foot, 170-pound three-star prospect arrived Sunday with an open mind. He left Pullman on Tuesday as Washington State's latest commitment:

""My mentality was to soak it all in to compare with other colleges, but it most definitely blew me away," Hernandez said. "It shocked me and opened up my eyes. On my official visit, I was around more coaches and I bonded with them more this weekend. I was around the team itself and was able to ask questions about why I should come to Washington State. I was able to bond with people around the city and town."

The California product said wide receiver coach Joel Filani and coach Jake Dickert were essential in his decision-making process. 

"Coach Filani is a great man," Hernandez said. "He knows what he's doing and what he's talking about. He's just such a genuine guy, and the trust has been built up over time. Even the head coach, Coach Dickert, he showed a lot of love and continuously called and texted me to see how I was doing. That showed a lot about Washington State and how much they care about their recruits."

Hernandez said his recruitment had slowed in recent weeks, but he held scholarship offers from Fresno State, Nevada, Oregon State, UNLV. Utah State and others.

With this commitment set, the Monrovia pass-catcher said he plans on focusing on getting to Pullman as soon as possible. 

Hernandez hopes to graduate in December and arrive in Pullman the following month.

Washington State has four pledges in its 2023 recruiting class, and Hernandez is the first out-of-state addition.
