In a battle between the nation's top two high school football programs, it was a sophomore who delivered the winning blow.

With No. 2 Mater Dei leading No. 1 St John Bosco 10-7 late in the fourth quarter, the Monarchs desperately needed a first down to keep the ball out of the hands of the trialing Braves.

But rather than simply get a first down, class of 2025 Mater Dei five-star running back Jordon Davison delivered the finishing blow, busting through the line for a game-clinching 38-yard touchdown run:

Davison, the nation's No. 1 running back in his class, may be from California, but he has a Big Ten childhood favorite.

""I grew up a fan of Ohio State," he said.

That interest led to a trip to see the Buckeyes last month, where he met LeBron James.

"It was great," the Mater Dei star said. "The environment was crazy, especially having LeBron at the game. I got to talk to him. I was kind of starstruck."

Still, he is keeping his options open.

Most recently, that meant an unofficial visit to USC, which left him impressed.

"I went last year, but everything has chanced since that," he said. "Seeing the stadium... last year it was empty. But the environment has totally changed over there. Everybody is engaged in the game."

Expect Davison's legend to grow after Friday night, and for college coaches to intensify the battle to secure his commitment.
